I hope all is well with you mamas ... I haven't been able to keep up with things since our little one arrived in her unexpected way. I've got a lot of healing to do first before I can.

DH and I are trying to name our precious girl now, and I think we're officially stumped. For the first time, we feel like we need a name with meaning. Nothing has felt perfect yet, perhaps we need more sleep, I don't know. We think her name needs to be strong and symbolic of rebirth or life - hope or love.

We've thought of Esther Rose or Kalliope Rose, but those names met resounding 'blech' from the kids. Eva appeals to DH, but I'm not sold on it. Elizabeth is ok, we'd want to call her Lizzie - but I don't "feel" like it's her name. The kids want Sophia, but I really don't want a trendy popular name, so I'm looking for something else. We don't want a name that starts with A, J, M, P, or C. Our DD's are Annie & Molly. We like traditional names with traditional spellings. Prefer names that end in the "ee" sound and are easy to spell or pronounce.

Janis,

Congrats on your baby girl! I did some searches on www.behindthename.com with some of the meanings you like and trying to find something that meets your criteria.

How do you feel about Zoe? (pronounced as two syllables- ZO-EE). It means life. And is very very cute IMO.

XOXO

I like Ruby and Lucy too

Hmm....

Zoe...means "life". And of course you can spell it many other ways as well.

I will try and think of some more. Erica, this thread needs you!!!

also wanted to recommend this site if you are concerned about popularity of names.

www.nametrends.net

its super cool because you can see how popular a name is state by state. I was amazed when someone asked about the name Owen on another thread. I thought it was popular. But interestingly enough, it wasn't in the top 100 in Texas, but it was #6 in Wisconsin.

Okay, so its a global world now, but its pretty nice to know that you aren't likely to have an Owen in your kid's kindergarten class if they are in Texas, whereas you'd be VERY likely in Wisconsin.

Zoe is ranked #53 in Texas FYI. higher than I thought. but damn is it cute next to Molly and Annie!

XOXO

LemonJuice,

Great minds think alike.

I also second the suggestion of Lucy and Ruby. Very nice names.

What about Ivy?

(dunno the meanings of any of those three, but they have the -ee ending).

Phoebe?

Sorry for all the posts, but right after I post another name comes into my head.

Also, if you want some really great detailed lists of suggestions, these ladies are name-a-holics and prefer traditional non trendy names.

http://bigbadbabynames.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=8

if the link doesnt work, its:
www.notwithoutmyhandbag.com
then click on the right where it says "message board"
then click the "advice forum"

my only warning is that they can be harsh. sometimes, I'm a little too fragile emotionally post partum to have someone crap on my name choices. KWIM?

best wishes Janis! I'm thinking about you and wishing you healing and happiness.

My husband and I like names that end in the "ee" sound also--we had a boy, but some of the girl names we liked were:

Sally
Elsie
Evie
Chelsey
Addie

Congrats on your new little girl and good luck with your name search!

Here are some of my 'traditional' thoughts...

Catherine...who you could call Katie or Cathy
Rose...who you could call Rosie

Perpetually breastfeeding or pregnant ENFP mom to a lot of kids...wife to a midwestern nice guy...living in tropical paradise...pink cats and homebirths rock!

I love Ruby and Zoe especially considering your other girls' names.

(We have considered both ourselves--actually DH loves Zoe, but I don't think it goes well with our last name. My DS2 came up with Ruby and insists on calling the the baby--yet to be born--"Baby Ruby". He's almost got me sold.)

Mom to 5 amazing kids! (DS8, DS7, DD4, DD2 and DS0)

Well, I've been reading the ideas today ... and I am so appreciative!

I can't address all the ideas, but many of the names suggested were automatically out because they are the names of friends (we obviously have lovely friends) and such ... Sadie is a name we like, but that's the name of our dog ...

We think we've settled on Zoe. I thought of it a few months ago, actually, but we never really discussed names before now. Now, the hard part is the middle name. I need it to be really meaningful. Every time I look at her, I need to gain strength and peace. I have to be reminded of those things when I look in her face.

Current thoughts:
Liora - light of God
Irene/Arina - peace
Etana - strength of God

Hi Janis, I've mostly been just reading posts but I saw yhis and wanted to say Liora is beautiful! I wish I'd heard that when I was naming DD3! We have Caitlyn Leann, Ashlyn Elizabeth & Karilyn Amanda. Karilyn's middle name we gave in to because we just couldn't settle on anyhing else. The middle names are all names of family though. And only the 3rd -lyn name was on purpose, lol.

Hope all is getting better for you. You are one of the strongest people I've met in a long time.I hope you can lean on us when you need us! I'm always sitting next to my open laptop.

YAY for Zoe!!! I hope you keep it. I think its an awesome choice.

I actually prefer Zoe Irene from your choices. It flows really nicely. Liora is lovely too, but I find Zoe Liora to be a bit of a mouthful. Still lovely, but Zoe Irene is just so classic and lovely.

All of your choices are winners though

XOXO

congratulations, mama, on your beautiful baby girl. I love the name Liora, if my ds had been a girl, it was on our shortlist! I only know one Liora (Leora, actually), and she is a gorgeous, wise and kind woman. I think Zoe Liora is a fantastic sounding and meaning name. Blessings and best wishes.

you might want to consider what "fits" with your other names as well. what are molly and annie's MNs? exotic like "etana" or classic like "irene"? just a thought....

I think technically Liora (or Leora you can spell it either way) means "My light" while Eliora means "God's light" In hebrew the names "Liorit" or "Orlit" are used too I believe. (Lee-or-eet)

I love Liora it was most likely going to be our girls name if we had a girl, and I'd love to see a little Zoe Liora but Zoe Irene is also beautiful.

After a 43-week-long beautiful pregnancy, our little Zoe Liora finally has a name!

She weighed 7#3oz and measured 20". She is beautiful and perfectly healthy. Her big sisters and parents are completely smitten.

Zoe means Life
Liora means My Light

She is our light and our life. May she continue to teach us patience and bring us joy every day.
