EVERYONE told me I was going to give in and start letting DD watch TV when my second child was born. I thought they might even be right, and I was even sort of okay with it--after all, she's 5, and it has never been our intention to be completely TV-free forever.

Well, DS is 14 months. There were maybe 8 days that DD watched this year, when both kids were sick and DS was very needy, or when I really needed a brief nap. That is IT. I did buy her her first DVD this year (Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer) but again, she's seen it maybe 5 times. I found that I was able to use TV just very occasionally, without it being an issue at all.

I don't even remember the last time she watched. Several months ago, for sure.

I feel really good about this and just wanted to share. FWIW, we will probably start letting DD watch an occasional movie sometimes soon. but I just don't seem to be getting around to it--life's too full!

grateful mother to DD, 1/04, and DS, 2/08

What an inspiration. Thanks for sharing your positive story.

I just convinced DH to give up TV for Spring & Summer. We will re-evaluate in the Fall. Life really is too short to sit in front of the TV.

I watched so much TV when I was a kid, and that was with only 4 channels. I rarely played outside. What a waste. I really don't want that for my DS.

DD is a total outdoors kid. She plays outside at least 2 hours a day, even when the weather is really hot (we live in FL). Today it was 93, but hey, no biggie... we got the kiddie pool out for the first time this year. I love to see her puttering around in the yard.

Congrats! That's a huge accomplishment.

We've been TV free for years! We love it.

We do watch movies from the library- but 98% of them are documentaries which I put into the "homeschooling" category. The other 2% are the far and few between childrens movies we get for dd there. But when we do those, they are wholesome movies like "Flicka" or "Dreamer" that we watch with her. We watch the occasional Christian cartoon as well, like Veggie Tales or a Max Lucado movie.

It's so nice to spend your time doing things that help your children grow and learn, that doesn't involve electronics!

Doula mama to artistic DD and monster DS. #3 on the way!

congrats, and thanks for the great encouragement!! We're totally TV free but I've been wondering if I'll become tempted to find youtube videos or other online media in the future. glad to know it's not inevitable

That sounds just great.

I wonder what is up with the naysayers. Why must they insist we are doomed? And even if our kids are happy and tv free they insist that soon enough.......

Nine years and counting? Can I say it works yet?

I loved your post!

Now if I can just curb my recent surge in internet use.......

Happy mom to DS2000, DS2002, DD2004, DS2006 and DS 10/2009:

We are TV free and I am only thinking of no. 2, and I must say that I do worry about how I will handle pregnancy and a newborn without help or a TV. It is very inspiring to read your experience
