I signed my daughter up for gymnastics camp after a friend who used to work there told me they don't do television except in aftercare.

However, I just dropped my daughter off there (her first day) and they had a movie going.

We don't do any screen time at all and I was pretty upset. My daughter told them right away "I don't watch tv" and they had games and coloring books out, but she's the kind of kid who gets GLUED to any screen and can't ignore it in the room. I'm so bummed.

The thing is, the actual camp doesn't start until 9:30 but they are open at 8 for drop-off, and I'm supposed to be at work at 8, so that's when I left her.

I can see two options:

a) just hoping that she won't watch it and will really engage in a game with one of the counselors

b) take her to work with me until 9:30 and then drop her off there so I know she's doing actual gymnastics and not getting screen time.

Sometimes I feel like I'm super-strict. My daughter's 5. But every time one of her friend's parents has gone behind my back and put her in front of a movie, she cannot stop talking about the characters, wanting to be like them, etc. I can't stand's like her imagination disappears and she's just being brainwashed or something.

Partnered mama with DD (01/04) and DD (08/09) and hoping to conceive and also adopt in 2017!

I really think you should do what you feel is best for your DD. But I had to comment that a few months ago I took DS to open gym at a gymnastics gym and I was shocked that the whole time we were there (noon-1) the 4-6 year old kids were sitting in a totally dark room in chairs watching what looked like a soap opera or similar. One of the boys was so uninterested/bored/looking for something valuable to do that he couldn't stop talking to us at the door (where we left our shoes/coats)

I almost cried to picture my DS sitting there in the dark in the middle of the day staring at a TV (let alone what was on it, I hardly care about the content honestly, I actually think the kids' shows/movies are the worst!) It was Spring Break, BTW, and about 65 degrees outside and sunny. They were in the dark room watching the TV so as to leave the area open for open gym. In my mind they should have been outside. Or if it was rest time, how about a story. Or if not about rest, the proprietor should have canceled open gym for the week and given the kids whose families were paying for camp the space all day.

Sorry if this is unhelpful, but it bothered me so much I had to share.

I do want to reiterate that I think you should follow your instinct and do what is best for your family/your DD.
