so, my instincts tell me that i don't want my 4 month old watching tv, but i'm trying to parse out my reasons. this began b/c i received as a gift a dvd "developmentally appropriate for 0-24 mo. olds". BUT, i've always assumed that there's no such thing as tv/video that is appropriate for under 2 yrs old. and that even up to age 4 that tv is "bad". so, now i'm trying to figure out the issue. i'm not trying to judge here, i just want some help figuring out what i think. AND, how to respond when people give my infant dvds. so, i've read about tv creating an environment that is less stimulating for the child b/c parents are interacting less with DC. that makes a lot of sense to me. i just don't want to place DS in front of the tv, and if we are around a tv i don't want him facing it. but, what about tv in the background? say, DH is watching baseball and DS and i are playing in the room, is that also bad? or, we're watching a debate with another couple, and we're all talking to eachother while tv is on (and DS isn't facing tv)? also, is tv/computer bad for kids for any visual/auditory reason? or are the reasons all about the environment and the content they are exposed to? i also have no idea how the other parents i know think of this, and i'm almost afraid to ask b/c i don't want to offend them if their kids watch dvds regularly. is avoiding tv/dvds common among AP parents? and can i tell gift givers that the AAP recommends no tv at least til age 2, or is that rude? any thoughts/tips appreciated.

Mama, I think you can definitely tell people in a polite way that you don't want your LO to watch TV/DVD's. In my experience, they think I am weird but go along with it.

Did you look through the list of links in the resources in this forum? I especially liked the book "plug in drug." You can probably get it from your library, I did. I think reading a book or two will help you organize your thoughts and be able to decide what your opinion really is.
