I don't suppose there's much a professional HCP can do to help...what can I do help heal? I googled a bit and saw a few mentions about taping the busted toe to its neighbour...

well of course, i can't give medical advice, blah, blah, blah, but, I have broken my toes tons of times! and yes, it looks like it's broke. And I'm always amazed how much it hurts to break a toe. Ice it, and tape it, that's all they would do at the Er or docs, just get medical tape and tape to the other toe. That's just for support.

I broke my big toe two summers ago and went to the doc for that, it was broke straight through. they gave me a walking cast and taped it. Well, i still can't bend the darn thing and it still hurts sometimes. their solution was surgery, uh, no thanks! but they do think i will have arthritis in it someday and need to be careful about that.

Good luck!

Yes, just tape it to the next toe. It will probably hurt for a long time b/c broken toes take a while to really heal. You can also ice it and I bet there are things you can take (like arnica and stuff like that) to help the healing. If it's really swollen you can get the swelling down by soaking it in ice water. I should warn you that this will probably hurt more than actually breaking it. I used to be a dancer and I had chronic achilles tendonitis and soaking in ice water was the only thing that relieved the swelling...but it is seriously torturously cold. Try to keep your foot in there for at least 5 minutes...

Good Luck!!!

ps. i don't think you could have a career as a foot model but i've seen way uglier feet!

Ow! I broke 2 toes (one was pretty crushed) and the pain was unbelievable. I went to the ER and they just taped up the toes, gave me some crutches and sent me home.

Do you have thick cozy socks and Tevas? That worked well for me when I couldn't wear a regular shoe.

Definitely could be broken.

About 4 years ago I broke both of my pinky toes within a few weeks of one another. (I was packing up a house including moving furniture all by myself - it was a recipe for disaster given how much of a clutz I am) One of the breaks was really bad so I went in for an xray just to make sure there weren't any chips or that it didn't need to be set in any way. I was also leaving town soon after so if a problem showed up later it would be extra problematic.

Even with the really banged up toe, the only thing to be done was to tape it. I ended up buying a new pair of sandals because I needed a shoe with a stiff sole that was not enclosed around the toes. I wore those sandals either bare or with socks for about 2 months.

Yeah that. I've broken almost every toe and its incredibly painful but they can't really do much for it.

I currently have a broken pinky toe, broken on Thanksgiving weekend. I went to Urgent Care and they x-rayed it. Sure enough, it was broken. My first clue was all of the bruising. I've been taping the toe to the next toe and wearing one of the velcro shoes from Urgent Care because I still can't put a regular shoe on.

I go to the second visit to the orthopedic dr on Friday. Hopefully I can stop taping and move to a regular shoe.

I didn't know a broken toe could be so painful!

Don't forget to ice it and elevate it as much as possible.

Hey, thanks for all your replies everyone!

The toe is swollen today and even more purple. It doesn't hurt much, only if I try bending it or put more pressure on it. Is the purpose of taping the toe to try and relieve some of the pain? Or is it to help the toe heal properly? I might skip the taping, because it isn't bothering me too much. I guess the only real concern is whether I develop arthritis in the toe later, even though it is only the baby toe. Maybe taping helps prevent this?

The socks and sandals won't do me much good here! I have to walk dd to preschool...15 minutes through the snow and -20C (-5F or so). I think my Docs are pretty roomy in the toes so I'll probably end up wearing them...even though they're 14 holes and take a while to lace up!

Thanks again. Happy New Year! Be careful about stubbing your toes if you've had *a few*

Since the little toe is too small for a cast or a splint of its own, the toes are taped so the next toe can act as a "splint" for the little toe.

I see. So it would help the toe heal correctly and probably decrease the chance of developing arthritis in the digit later on.

I'm starting to think it might not actually be broken...it really doesn't hurt that much at all! I'm just worried about stubbing the poor thing again before it's healed! I'm such a klutz, it's probably going to happen.

VisionQuesst, I hope your toe heals quickly!

I've broken my pinky toes a couple of times. One time, it was stuck out at a weird angle from my foot. Unfortunately, it was the middle of winter (in a very snowy place) and I couldn't wear a shoe and had to walk 8 blocks to the ER. Fortunately, it didn't actually hurt (shock I guess ) until I got it set.
Yes, taping is just to help it set straight. Doesn't really do anything about the possibility of arthritis at all. I never kept mine taped- it hurt more to tape them than it did to leave them untaped.

I'm glad it's doing ok. I too wonder if it is actually broken because in my experience, and that of my mom too, broken pinky toes are incredibly painful. That you can wear shoes without unbearable pain makes me think maybe sprain or something similar maybe? I hope.

I don't think my toe needs setting, so I'll probably be okay without the tape.

Yeah, I think it's hurting even less this evening than it was this morning. I guess I got lucky...I hope my luck holds out and I don't smash my toe into something while it's still a bit tender.

Ice, elevation, rest... (yeah right)

Arnica Montana topically and homeopathic pellets as needed for discomfort. Also, some Epsom salt baths for comfort.
