When I had it I was told it is a diagnosis of exclusion. If it's not a brain tumor, MS, stroke etc. they call it Bell's Palsy. One of the medical thoughts is that it is related to any one of a number of viruses, chicken pox/shingles being the number one. I was given antivirals for it as well as steroids. Whether they helped ot the deep tissue massage a PT friend did I can't tell you. I only got abbout 90% back. But the deep tissue massage felt wonderful!
I had it while I was pregnant with the twins. We cleared it up with a short course of prednisone. I've never heard of any relation specifically to chicken pox, but it makes sense that any virus that causes inflammation could potentially lead to inflammation of the facial nerve, and hence bell's palsy, right? I did a lot of research on this when I had it, but that was three years ago, so I don't remember much. I was offered antivirals, too, but declined them.
