I saw an old (5yr) thread here similar to this and was hoping for some ideas. My 8 year old developed abdominal pain about 5-6 weeks ago. It's right at her belly button, with some pain on the right side. After about 9 visits to the pediatrician, we ended up at some specialists and are waiting the results of her abdominal CT scan. (She's also had a kidney ultrasound and stomach x-ray).

I know they are presuming this is functional abdominal pain and a doctor we liked said the whole thing should last 6-8 weeks. But ... it seems more acute. Something seems wrong. A medicine he thought would help with the pain in 4-5 days hasn't helped in 11, etc.

Anyhow, she just had some white poop ... I didn't see it ... I figured it was because she's been put on both Miralax and Ex-Lax, but when I started seeing suggestions of liver involvement it made me wonder.

Any thoughts or have I just lost it? Cooped up with a moaning child for 6 weeks, I'm pulling my hair out!

While bile salts from the liver give stool its brownish color, liver involvement is not the only possible cause of pale stools. The range includes things such as consumption of antacids containing aluminum hydroxide, parasites, gall bladder dysfunction ... the list goes on.

It's worth making a call to the pediatrician who has been overseeing your LO's care because it could be a symptom of what's to blame for her pain.

How far out are you from scans? Did they use barium? That will color the poop white until it clears.

Some medications do it too. Call your pharmacist and find out if one of the side effects of the med she is on is white poop (it may well be).

Outside of that I agree you have to think liver. I would definitely let the doctor know unless she's had barium very, very recently or (more likely) it's a known effect of the medication.

I have a son with liver disease. His bile can't drain out properly and he used to have white stools up until a couple months ago (switched him to a holistic doc and hes being cured).

If your child has white stools it's most likely bcus bile is not getting out, and if it's not, then your child will become jaundice. You will notice it in the eyes and stomach area first. Your child will also become very sick. It does not sound like a bile problem to me. Here is my sons blog, you can see some pics.

Have they checked her gallbladder function? Pain in the right side of the stomach with digestive problems sound like gall bladder issues to me. The discoloration could also be caused by the medications, but given her other symptoms, they should check out her liver. Are her eyes yellow?

If you don't have abdominal CT scan results yet it might be the barium from the scan.
