Just looking for some advice here. Last weekend I started feeling like I had a kidney infection (fever/chills, nausea, back pain)- I had one several years ago, so I know what they feel like. It was a Friday, but I decided to hold off on seeing the dr. Instead I upped my water intake and took a Super CranActin supplement. While on that, my 11 month old nursling started having diarrhea. I googled and found out that one of the herbs in the supplement (uva ursi) was not to be used while nursing, so I stopped after having taken 7 pills over the course of a day and a half. His diarrhea improved after that, but whether it was related or just a stomach bug, I don't know.

Anyway, I was feeling quite a lot better at this point. The morning after stopping the supplement I did have a couple instances of burning during urination, but I again upped my water intake and started taking straight cranberry juice. I decided to call the dr. on Monday just to get a urinalysis. They wouldn't do that without seeing me, and they couldn't see me until Weds. By Wednesday my only symptoms were an occasional pressure-y feeling at the end of the day, and even that was pretty much gone. The Dr. who saw me prescribed Levaquin (?), but when I told her I was nursing changed to ampicillin, 3xday for 10 days and to start immediately. (And also 650 mg of Tylenol because I had a fever of 99. Is that really considered a fever? I mean, it was 90 degrees that day, maybe I was just a little warm...)

Well, I didn't start immediately because I wanted to wait 'til my UA came back. Today I had a message that the UA came back abnormal, but they're waiting on the results of the culture. I assume I won't get that info back until Monday. I hate antibiotics, and I double hate the idea of being on antibiotics while nursing, but I also don't want to risk damaging my urinary tract by letting bacteria proliferate. So do I take the antibiotics or just wait it out? 30 pills seems like soooo much, and then there's the potential of thrush...ugh.

If you've made it this far, thanks for listening.

well, no 99 isn't really a fever, you can easily hit 99 or even 100 sitting in a hot car waiting on the a/c!!

If you have waited this long, and it's getting better.....if I were in the position I would keep waiting. If it comes back positive ask if you can have another test done now that your symptoms have subsided.

I had a UTI very much like that, it only lasted 2 or 3 days, and we didn't have insurance so I treated it myself like you have and perhaps I was lucky but it went away I was back to "normal" by the 5th day.

I agree w/this.

Either way, however, I would get on a really good probiotic. They're a good preventative and if you do end up having to take an antibiotic at least you will have it to replenish your flora!

I would also monitor w/the OTC Azo test strips. They can at least give you some indication (or peace of mind) while you are waiting.

I recently had a similar experience. I got a UTI and went to a specialist (a long time ago I used to get UTIs all the time after intercourse but I figured out natural ways to prevent them and hadn't had one in 10 years!) I went to the specialist because that is where I went 10 years ago. Big mistake - I should have seen my midwife or awesome family doctor. (I'm MUCH more crunchy than I was 10 years ago. )

In any case, I started getting symptoms very mildly on Sunday, saw the doctor on Tuesday got a call-back on Friday with a positive culture and what the bug was susceptible to. They weren't family-friendly at all, had no idea what worked or didn't work with breastfeeding and were generally terrible to work with (they told me to just stop breastfeeding!) They finally prescribed the antibiotic I wanted (my choices weren't good given the susceptibility) but they prescribed it at a dose I thought was way too high. So I ended up calling my family doctor who agreed it was fine to take a lower dose and he gave me a new prescription. By the time I had done all that -- I was starting to feel better so I waited a day. And then another day... and I just kept getting better and better... so I never took the antibiotic. I waited about a week and went into see my family doctor again because I wanted to make sure the infection was gone. He did a repeat urine culture and it was clear. I did have a trace of blood in my urine and a few white blood cells but he said that was normal given I was still on the mend. I never had a fever but I did feel pretty drained while healing. I listened to my body and got LOTS of rest while sick - I think that helped tremendously. I also drank plenty of water and acidified my urine with diet.

I had a kidney infection when I was seven and am generally very susceptible to getting UTIs. I always ran to the doc for antibiotics immediately. Now I am inclined to give it an extra day or two.

Can you please share more about any natural ways you use to prevent them. It would be so helpful and I'd really appreciate it!

Thank you all for the advice. I think I will hold off on the antibiotic because it just feels wrong to start taking it now when I feel fine. I've never seen those AZO strips before, but I'll head to the drug store to find some. I did just purchase some Crandophilus from the HFS which combines a potent cranberry with a strong probiotic, so I'll continue to take that for a few days.

Luminesce: Your experience sounds a lot like mine. The doctor I saw had no idea really what to prescribe that would be safe for nursing. She went with ampicillin because it's generally safe for pregnancy, I think. One question- how do you acidify your urine with diet? Are there certain foods that help? Thanks!

allnatural mom, you might want to look into d-mannose as a preventative.

I would get the prescription filled in case you get worse or your symptoms linger. You can just keep it for just in case...you don't have to take it if you are sure you are better after some time passes.

I've had 2 UTIs this year. The earlier one I was able to kick back with natural methods and so was dh. This last one was awful. Maybe I have the flu also or it spread to my kidneys? I was taking lots of d-mannose and vitamin C. I got a fever of 103, but it went down with tylenol. I had to take something, I couldn't stop shivering. My kidneys were hurting, but everything was really hurting.

My dr gave me a script for an antibiotic called bactrim. I'm not nursing or pregnant. This antibiotic has been very affective, but the side effects suck. I have headaches, feel like I need to vomit if I don't eat like every two hours, and this TERRIBLE joint pain. My dad says he gets joint pain everytime he gets sick and to take some ibuprofen. I just have 4 more days of antibiotics thank goodness. I really don't like taking them, but I was just not getting any better. Maybe I should give up my diaphragm? If I give it up, I'm going to have to switch to birth control pills hmmmmmmm. I haven't been very good about charting.

Hey... Thanks for that! We have some and have used it...

I was just wondering if there was anything else I was missing.

Well, having some burning today and the AZO strip came back positive. Guess it's time to start the antibiotic. Phooey.

well that stinks, but like you I'd rather not take the antibiotics if I didn't have to...but I would to kill a UTI.

Hi I'm a nursing mom who also wants to try natural ways to deal with UTI's.  Last year i got about 4 uti's. This year I got one, was prescribed macrobid twicw a day for 5 days (seems too little) and after finishing my antibiotics the uti came back with a vengence and then i was prescribed bactrim for another 5 days.  I've also been taking vitamin c and cranberry which seemed to work pretty good. I ordered d-mannose for the first time and jsut read the bottle and it says WARNING- do not take if your nursing or pregnant.  Was wondering if anyone knows anything about this.  I will also call the company tomorrow to find out more info on this matter. thanks
