I am 35 y/o and in May of 2010 I weaned our son after being nursing or pregnant for the past 8 ½ years. In the past I had always had clockwork regular cycles and my period returned, on average, 6-8 months after each child's birth. Starting in June of 2010 my cycles became highly irregular. I missed a period in June of 2010 and then began bleeding in early July and continued bleeding until late August. My period was heavy and clotty and I was diagnosed as anemic in August. I met with a NMW in September who sent me for a vaginal ultrasound where two large ovarian cysts were found. No uterine abnormalities were noted. The cysts were removed in October and the surgeon said that my ovaries looked good and he felt they were functional. My cycles went back to being regular again in November, December and January but in February I returned to extremely irregular, heavy, long-lasting periods. Meanwhile I had an FSH test and was told that I was at a 1.9 which does not indicate that I am perimenopausal. CBC and thyroid tests have come back "normal." Currently I have been bleeding for eight weeks with no end in sight. I am confident I am still anemic as I am loosing between 2 and 6 oz. of blood a day. I tried Vitex for a few months but it had no effect. Last week I had a uterine biopsy which came back as normal as well. The NMW is out of ideas and has recommended I see a gynecologist for a D&C. Everything I have read about a D&C for excessive bleeding indicates that this is a temporary solution. I am not necessarily opposed to birth control pills but I would really like to know why this is happening. I don't want to mask the issue for a couple of months only to have it come back, no closer to an answer. I would really like to have one more child so I don't want to consider an ablation or hysterectomy. In the mean time though, this is overrunning my life…I don't go anywhere without being very close to a bathroom, have missed work and had to leave the gym due to excessive bleeding, I don't feel like being intimate with my husband and I am simply exhausted, physically, emotionally and financially from trying to solve this issue.
Thanks in advance!
- Has anyone been through something similar?
- Did you receive an accurate diagnosis and if so, what was it?
- Who did you see? (OB/GYN, Endocrinologist, Neuropath, etc?)
- Were you able to conceive again?
- Do you have any suggestions as to what I should try or what kind of practitioner I should see?
- Has anyone been to a reproductive endocrinologist for something like this?
Thanks in advance!
