While pregnant with my son a few years ago, I had a reaction to eating any red meat. I would get nauseous with radiating mid back pain. Like my stomach was distended and pressing on my spine. I would vomit a few times and the pain would slowly subside. It only happened a few times before I figured out the trigger.
Now, I am 28 weeks pregnant and haven't eaten any red meat for fear of this happening again.
Three weeks ago, I had a severe episode that lasted over 24 hours, from start to finish. Vomiting and severe pain lasted about 12 hours. I hadn't eaten any red meat. I had cereal for breakfast, pbj for lunch and some popcorn. I attributed it to the popcorn, which I know can be hard to digest.
I had another episode last night. It lasted only five hours, start to finish, but was severe the entire time. The only trigger I can determine would be corn.
I called my doctor who said it didn't sound digestive, or like kidney/gall bladder and that there was nothing that could be done.
The pain is debilitating, I quickly become covered head to toe in sweat, I shake severely (almost to the point of convulsing), and I have passed out breifly during each episode. My stomach is tender to the touch. It feels as if I've run out of room for my organs and the baby. The back pain is the worst part. It hurts worse than my natural unmedicated childbirth did.
Any insight? I'm desperate for answers.
It does sound like a kidney/gallbladder issue to me (I have no medical training - so take that for what it is worth) I think that it would be good to go in and get it checked, as kidney issues during pregnancy can be quite severe. And if it is a gallbladder issue, you need to know, as again, they can go bad and need to be removed, which I think would be quite a big deal while pregnant.
I would say go in and see your doc and find out. There should be some blood tests to check kidney function and other issues.
Either way, that is NOT normal, so it needs to be checked out by a doctor.

Hi, Did you figure out what you have?
I am 18 weeks pregnant and I have been having the exact same problem.
I was at a BBQ and ate ribs, and soon after hit me with severe mid upper back pain last 5 hours and vomitting. I knew it wasn't right, so I went to ED but the docs just thought it was muscle related.
I was sent home after urinalysis.. Throughout several days, My back pain was still there, but concentrating around my right side, underneath my right rib cage. Also, whenever I take a deep breath, it hurt even more. So, I went back to ED, did some bloodwork, and everything was normal.
I still wasn't getting better after 2 days, and I demanded an ultrasound ... I was convinced it was my gallbladder.. the doctor didn't think it was cause my liver enzyme wasn't elevated.
So, I am waiting on my ultrasound appt. tmr....
But in the mean time last night I had some meat again because of the craving.. However it was a bad mistake. Now I know what triggers it... It was the exact severe back pain from a week ago.... vomitting all night and can't sleep...
I hope you figured your issue out... I am just waiting for the ultrasound... I need a diagnosis.. this is driving me insane..
