Hi, all. My one year old DD recently had a fingerprick blood test for lead. I got a call from my doctor saying that it was ever so slightly high, but because the finger stick frequently gives false high levels, she wants to bring DD in for a venous blood draw.

Here's my issue. Her level was only borderline above normal-low enough that if that level is indeed correct, the only thing they'll do is check it again in a few months. In the mean time, I can look into ways of reducing and preventing exposure (I live in a new building, and our "risk level" for lead is very low).

I guess what I'm wondering is this: would I be a horrible mother if I say no to the venous blood draw? I feel like it won't really make a difference in the long run since the level was so close to normal. If we do the venous and it is the same level (ped said the level rarely is higher with a venous) nothing will happen that I'm not already doing...right?

DD is pretty sensitive, so I'd like to not have to stick her more times than necessary. However, I want to make sure she's ok.

WWYD?

Oh, also, what can I do about the lead? I haven't researched it yet, but is there something I should be doing to prevent further exposure?

It sounds like the blood test won't tell you anything different; and either way, you're probably getting a follow up test in a little while? Sounds like it's not really worth it, imo. Your best bet is to look for potential exposure sources and limit that, imo. Here's a handy article:

Exactly. They'd planned to do a follow up at her 15 month Well-Baby.

Thanks! I think I'll go ahead and wait.
