I read an article from England that said diet can help dementia dementia diet
But does anyone have an experience on what to feed a senior citizen who has Alzheimer's
Honestly, I don't think diet can reverse the damage already done, especially depending on the age of the person affected.
My late Mom had dementia. But, her dementia was as a result of multiple strokes. The damage was done (it was visible on the MRI).
She had an excellent diet prior to her strokes and since then, too. She died in July.
Dementia is a pretty broad term and can be used to describe behaviour from damage to the brain. It can result from stroke, Alz, brain injury and other diseases.
True Alz begins earlier in people's lives and the only true way to diagnose it is through autopsy.
I do think there is a connnection between certain types of dementia and environmental concerns (pollution, vaccines, medications) and personal abuse (drugs and alcohol). Possibly, through genetics, as well.
A healthy diet is always a great idea, no matter your age. Lots of organic produce (preferably self-grown) and limited red meats.
I am not a believer in eating fish, fresh or wild. And, especially if it is farmed (YECH).
I think there has been far too much human tampering with our foods (GMO) and that there is way too much processed foods in most peoples diets.
Diet also needs to be paired with sensible lifestyles, too. Exercise and lots of fresh, clean air are important. Good sleep and minimal stress, too.
So, a clean, organic "safe" diet in your younger years through middle age might help stave off behavioural problems in ones elder years, but it isn't any guarantee. Nothing is. It can't hurt, in any case.
As far as what to feed a senior with Alz, I'd feed them what made them happy (and, if possible, sneak in vitamins, to supplement). Their lives are not going to get better and why not allow them the happiness of foods they love???
I hope you aren't dealing with this. If so, you have my sympathies and thoughts for as peaceful a time as possible.
