Hello everyone!

My 6 year old son started clearing his throat a few days ago. He doesn't have a cold or anything. It's a very slight/small sound but he does it constantly, sometimes every second. I have no idea what could be causing this?

It could be a 'tic'.  What I've learned is that children in this age group (early grade school years) sometimes acquire tics for a period of time and they go away. If they don't, and more appear, then you might consider a tic disorder like Tourette's. My oldest has it, and it's very obvious. He has multiple motor and vocal tics (throat clearing is considered a vocal tic) that have persisted and changed over time. They've been apparent since he was 18 mos old.

If he's not ill, offer water and just ignore. If it persists for a longer period of time, you could discuss with with ped.

My only other thought is reflux, but it sounds like Momsteader's suggestion is more likely.

allergies?

My son clears his throat when he has post nasal drip. No other symptoms are present when this happens.

I'm not a mom (yet smile.gif) but I would guess it could also be some form of OCD.

My little brother has been this way. He is 15 now, and ever since I can remember he ALWAYS has some kind of little "nervous habit". He is aware of them now, and tries not to, so he's getting better. But generally one will just replace another. There has been the throat clearing, popping knuckles, moving his jaw, picking at his hair, etc  . . .
