First off, I don't agree with circumcisions anymore, but it's too late for us with this baby! I have been concerned about his circumcision on and off for six months.

My son is 10 months and keeps pulling on his penis. It is red on one part of the circumcision and looks almost like the skin is so tight that is is pulled away from the penis in that small spot. I'm not good at pulling down his skin to inspect his circumcision regularly, so it may have been that way for awhile. It has been red in that spot before and last spring his doctor said to use Desitin on it. However, the Desitin was irritating to his penis. Needless to say we don't see this doc anymore.

I don't think it is life threatening, but I am concerned and wondering if anyone out there has any experience with this scenario. Should I take him to be seen or not? Should I be putting something on it?

Thanks!!!

HI Heather,
Not sure I have much advice but I know that boys do pull on their penis a lot and this is pretty normal (they never stop!). A little redness from it is not uncommon.
As far as the consistent red spot. If it's chafing maybe just a little vaseline would help once in awhile.
If it starts to really "glow," does not go away, or starts oozing like its infected then definitely take him in to be seen.
Unfortunately circumcisions often are not done "perfectly" and there are spots that pull or need to be watched.
I was enlightened afterwards too, so you're not alone.
Good luck,
Ann

Thanks for your helpful advice! It looks like it is getting a little better. I think his circ was aggrevated from wet diapers. I am usually pretty careful about changing him right away but I think I must have slacked last week. My husband and I are going to keep monitering the situation though. My hubbby and I never knew all the possible consequences and hassles of having our son circumcised!

Heather-
Do not pull or move the folds of skin on a baby boys penis that is circumcised, that is a big no no you do NOT need to check or clean it that way. If you need more info on how to take care of a circd penis please feel free to pm me. Our family has a history of penile cancer and diabtes in my dh's side so have several men circd as adults and the surgery and the care of themselves is a hot topic at family get-togethers.

Thanks, Vanna's mom. But my son is 11 months and now I'm wondering if we may have caused some of the redness and stretched skin effect by pulling down the skin to look at the circ. It looks better now that we have been more vigilant with diaper changes again. :

That could be one thing that is an irritant to a circd penis is real vaseline -the brand name kind, if you want to coat it to protect during loose bms etc.. try to find unpetroleum jelly or at least the kind that is unscented and white or pure.
I am glad to hear your baby is doing better
