Monday (12 hours before we were scheduled to move to Japan) we received notice that DS has a very rare form of cancer on his head (dermatofibrosarcoma). He had a biopsy last week on a bump on his head that he's had since birth (we had it checked over a month ago by the doc and was told it was a clogged oil duct) "just to be safe". Okay, so my question is, what can I be doing now to help his immune system? He is about 95% Bfed still and I have adjusted my diet to include more fruits and veggies and I have given up meat, dairy, and eggs. Should I be giving him something? Any herbs or what? I guess I just feel that I should be doing something to help him while we are waiting surgery to have it removed. Any suggestions would be wonderful.

TIA-
Barbara

I still remember the day of my son's diagnosis. PM if you want someone to vent to or just say the stuff that you can't say to anyone else. As far as immune boosters, maybe Vitamin C. Otherwise I can't think of any off the top of my head. I will take a look and repost if I come up with anything.

I don't know anything about your son's type of cancer, but I've read that for certain types immune boosters like echinacea/vit C are *not* advised. I think the theory is that having cancer means that the immune system is already hyper-stimulated (because cells are growing out of control) and you don't want to stimulate it even more. I'm sorry if this info. is vague and not completely accurate, but I think you should find out more before giving any type of supplement. and best wishes to your ds and your family.

Oh mama,
Some natural immune boosters you could take :
1. Carlson's very finest fish oil or Nordic Naturals. Omega 3s in fish oil increase immunity and decrease any inflammatory process that might be going on. If you ever restart eggs you could buy the free range type that have omega 3s.
2. Probiotics (good bacteria in your gut) are available in yoghurt. Stoneyfield yoghurt is a wonderful organic choice. Dannon is best if you don't do organic. Probiotics also help immunity and a host of other functions. Homemade yoghurt or kefir is best, but I'm guessing that would be too much to think about right now. Try to take the yoghurt three times per day if you can.
3. If you happen to have a juicer you could also try some of that. Juicing makes the vitamins and enzymes readily available to your body.

hugs,

sorry...I just read that you don't do dairy. Soy yoghurt is available. Goat milk yoghurt is more easily digestible than cow milk. I don't know if that is an option for you.

I was just scrolling down the discussions page to get to the diapering board and saw this title. I have no advice, only . I will keep your son and your family in my thoughts for a safe procedure and speedy recovery. My dd is not much younger than your son and I can only imagine how scared you are right now. It's just heartbreaking.

Never tried it but I've hear wonders about the "Noni Juice". May be someone here knows more about it.

Thank you mamas for all your prayers and hugs, I feel it is truely a blessing to be able to come to Mothering and talk. DS has an appt at the Duke University hospital on Aug 19th for a consult and then we will see when the surgery will be to remove the cancer. It's funny that the doc said that this is an aggressive cancer, but it seems like all we do is wait for appts (just a little vent). I will update you when I can, but until then I will keep increasing my organic fruits and veggies--add a little fish oil and take comfort in the fact that you are all keeping us in your thoughts.

Hugs to you all-
Barbara

I will be praying for you also. I read once somewhere that breastmilk kills cancer cells in a petri dish. http://www.infactcanada.ca/milkkillscancer.htm keep nursing it can't hurt. Maybe if you rubbed some on the bump?

Get a second opinion...it could be that it is not cancer.
