Help! Has anyone else's baby had to have this test? My newborn had to have a VCUG due to hydronephrosis, and the doctor suspects UPJ obstruction. The renal nuclear (MAG3) scan sounds even worse than the VCUG (which wasn't as bad as I thought because it was quick). But how do they get an IV into an 8-9 pound infant? And I was told at first that ds wouldn't need a urinary catheter this time, but the urologist said he does require one. Is this really necessary? There is only one pediatric urologist in Tucson, so I can't get a second opinion. At the VCUG, the nurse said as he went to insert the catheter into my 1 week old intact baby, "let's see how far this retracts" and I said "no! don't do that!" and he said he has to and proceeded anyway, after I said no. Luckily he saw the opening so easily that he didn't retract it, but we may not be so lucky again.
Please, can anyone tell me what a renal scan entails for my ds? Not knowing what to expect makes me worry even more. And how do you get through this, having to see your baby undergo a painful procedure and not be able to hold him and comfort him. He still breastfeeds constantly, so he will also be deprived of food for the duration of the test.
Does this really need to be done so soon? DS has grade 3 hydronephrosis in the right kidney only, and no reflux.
Sorry this is so long, I think the stress is going to drive me crazy. I just want to be able to enjoy my baby's first weeks, but I can't stop thinking about this test and the possible open surgery at 2 months old. How do you moms who have gone through this cope?
