My dd is almost 20 mos. old. From the time she was able to chew, she has loved to eat chalk. Even now I have to keep it away from her or she will try to eat it. Does this signify some strange deficiency in her diet? I know she is not deficient in calcium b/c she drinks TONS of raw milk.

Anybody have any clues, I'm very curious?

Sounds like pica, which indicates an iron deficiency. I get this when I'm pregnant (well, at least the cravings to eat things like laundry detergent, chalk, etc....I don't actually eat them).

Milk soes not contain calcium that is bioavailable...and unless she is getting a good amount of other nutrients (magnesium, potassium) she can't use it anyway. But it does sound like pica if it's a compulsion. You may want to ask a good doc or nutritionist.

Iron deficiency can be treated fairly easily with blackstrap molasses in warm water. We call it kid's coffee. About 1 Tablespoon molasses per 8 oz water.

Thanks for the replies! I was kind of wondering about the pica. I love the idea of kids coffee, we will definitely be trying that one!
