I was under the impression that since bifidobacterium comprises most of the gut flora of normal BF babes, which keeps pathogens out and the gut at a proper ph.... that is why lactobacillus supplementation is not going to do very much.

Quote:
When a baby is breast-fed by a healthy mother, a protective microflora comprised almost entirely of bifidobacteria is established. This process stimulates intestinal peristalsis and, more importantly, helps babies to have acidic stools (pH 5.0-5.5) containing both free and combined forms of acetic, lactic and formic acid, which inhibit the growth of pathogenic, disease-causing bacteria. http://www.natren.com/pages/baby.html
My concern would be that lactobacillus would inappropriately take up space that the bifidus should be? And shift more towards an adult gut flora and less of a babe's? I do not really know the answer to these questions. After all, BM contains lactobacillus as well.

I do know the most important factor in shift of gut flora from bifidus dominant babe to adult version is food. There has been studies showing any formula supplementation of a BF infant automatically produces an adult-like gut flora (more bad bacteria, less bifidobacteria) and therefore less protection for immune system, resulting in a leaky gut and susceptibility for atopic disease. I know you already know this FF, just thinking out loud.

Maybe given that BM is the only food for your wee one, and we know that the type of lactose in BM is a special kind that favors the development of bifidobacterium, the correct flora will right itself?

Sorry to hear about your pooping troubles, ff. We had the opposite problem with ds, too frequent poops, due to oversupply problems.
