DD is miserable because she can't breathe through her nose and therefore can't nurse. She's sick and not eating food either. Does anyone have any tips for clearing a runny/stuffed nose? I have tried steam with little effectiveness. Using the bulb syring just makes her cry, which makes her nose run more. I also expressed some into a glass but she didn't want to drink it this way.

Thank goodness for pedialyte popsicles. Without them she'd have gotten zero fluids yesterday.

: It's been a tough weekend.

Thanks.

Have you done some saline? When dd's nose gets like that I make sure to squirt some saline up there at least a few times a day. I also increase her vit. C. I know the syringe makes her miserable, but it really does help if you can loosen it up and get it out. Maybe only use the syringe after you have done the steam and the saline to loosen it up a bit.
Hope she feels better soon!

You can squirt a little breast milk up there... it may help.

Vicks makes a baby vapor rub that helps. Also, Johnson's has a stuffy noses baby bath... that makes the bath into a vicks vapor-y like experience.

I usually use a bulb syringe a few times before nursing if it's really bad... even if they hate it. (I'm mean.)

Try making slushies as a way to get fluids down (in addition to pedialyte). Could try also making a breast milk smoothie (breast milk, some ice, frozen fruit, etc.)

a warm shower...she wouldn't even need to be in the stream of water but if you close the bathroom doors and get the shower running and you stand in it while it's going pretty warm...it drains everything from my dd's nose. A bath looses that steamy effect because it can't be warm enough to create steam and have her in there.

i agree with the above posts and would like to add-
if you have a humidifier, you can add eucalyptus essential oil to it. they also make them with a special place for the oils. or use an aromatherapy diffuser. white camphor works wonders also. i like to put some drops of the camphor and eucalyptus in the bath as well.
to make a more natural vaporub-
in a double boiler (or little pot sitting on water in a bigger pot) put around 2 oz sweet almond oil and add some (maybe a teaspoon or a bit more) beeswax. take off heat and add 10 drops of camphor and 10 drops of eucalyptus. pour into a nice container, let it cool, and voila - vaporub.

Someone once said a wee bit of pepper by the nose to make the baby sneeze and get the snot out when it's really just right there to come down.
