One day DH and I noticed that one nipple on dd (age 4.5) seemed larger than the other.when I felt it it seemed like there was a hard lump underneath it and she said it hurt when I touched it. It seemed to go down some over the next couple days, but still seems larger than normal. the other side seems slightly enlarged. It has been a week.
Any ideas? when do they start developing?
I have always given her mostly organic dairy and beef and kept RBGH out of her system.

This can be a byproduct of soy intake. I know a vegetarian family where the mom ate a lot of soy during pregnancy, and a lot of soy products not merely the natural soy stuff. Her children all ate a lot of soy products and her 3 year old girl has breast buds the doc blames on the estrogen mimicking of soy. They are now limiting their soy intake to natural soy mostly and only soy products on rare occasions. The doc is just watching the buds to see what happens, not doing anything yet.

I would have a doc check it out in case it is something important.

If there was a lump, I really think you should take her into the doc. It could be one of a thousand reasons of which only a few could be truly worrisome, but it's worth it to make sure it's one of the non-worrisome reasons.

we don't eat much soy and when we do it is just tofu, soy sauce, and tempeh, no soy cheese or anything like that, but i did eat some of that when i was pregnant with her. i am going to bring her along to dd2 1 year check up and have her take a look.
thanks for replies.

I would check it out with a doctor. The one sided thing and the pain seems like it could be something other than early development. Maybe just a cyst (pimple)?
