Hi, I'm posting because I had asked for some help a while back about surgery for an orchiopexy for my son. He had a hydrocele and an undescended testicle at birth. He is now 2 1/2 years old and my pediatric urologist was ever so patient. We had our first consultation at 6 months and were told to wait until he was a year old. At his 2nd follow up at 1 year old we were told to wait until he was 2. At his 3rd follow up at 2 years old doctor finally suggested surgery which took everything I had emotionally to finally schedule when he was 2 1/2. I guess from lurking around here I had seen infants operated on and adolescents and I wanted to say my thang for any new mom who is dealing with this and trying to work with a doctor about making a decision that could impact their sons life forever (pardon the drama, that's how I viewed it). It was outpatient surgery, he had general anesthetic (which worried me most) and was nauseated for a day and a half afterwards but was playing and squatting playing with his choo choo trains (which was allowed by doctor) although taking it a bit easy in the sitting and up and down motions. Lordy I'm glad it's over. From my research and reading, if the testicle is not desended it can present a problem with fertility, the testicle could become cancerous while in the abdomen and there would be no way to detect, and of course appearance for all those teasing friends and there is the chance there is a hernia the testicle is keeping open by not going to the scrotum where it belongs. Anyways, I felt motivated to post this as I really value these boards for sources of moms and dads who parent as I do and are at the beginning of this journey.
