(brief history first) When my twins were born at home we used regular cord clamps, clamping about 4in from the tummy. Later retied with embroidery floss and cut off the clamps, leaving the normal length. Both stumpies fell off by 5 days which I thought was quick considering how fast the previous two kids' had taken 2+ weeks. We treated the stumps with just saline. When the stumps fell off, both belly buttons looked quite raw and almost still open. Shira's healed well and has stayed healed. Miriam still (at 7mo) has issues.

Every 3 - 4 weeks, it "flares up". Bright red and oozy. I've tried just using saline to wash it and dry it out. Soap and water and rinse and dry. During diaper changes, I'll dry it out. Used A&D ointment once and that didn't work. I've tried looking in deep and it still seems open? Doesn't seem to bother her, but it's such an angry bright red that I wonder what it could be and if it has some sort of infection. Babies haven't been to a ped since they were 2 days old, and ped (only one OK with no vax) won't be back in country until mid-March.

Any ideas on what it could be? Other treatment options? We really try to avoid going to ped at all.

My DD's (now 15mos) stump came off a lot sooner than I expected as well, given my experience w/her older brother. When it did it was much more raw/fresh under than I recalled from DS.

I did mention it to pedi, who said it was fine just keep clean, watch for infection. It behaved exactly as you describe - looking/acting moslty healed, but for many months it seemed there was still a deeper part that was unhealed, and would randomly gunk up for a couple days then resolve. I went to all her well baby visits and would ask about it every time, and was told its nothing to worry about. It did end up finally really closing, though I can't really recall when. Her BB is perfectly fine now.

It always kind of bothered me, but I trusted my pedi, and it did finally just resolve on its own. Hope that helps, but if you're truly worried, maybe worth a check?

My DD's belly button didn't seem completely closed until recently. She just turned a year old. Some babies it just takes a long time to close up completely and as long as any redness or gunk clears up with treatment I wouldn't worry about it. I've heard of some mamas using goldenseal powder or tincture on it for infections but I never used anything at all except plain water to clean my babies' belly buttons.
