I know this is the vax board but I have a questions regarding cod liver oil. How do you know the good brand to buy/ how it's purified? Any dangers of mercury in it? How is the taste? What do you mix it in? I gag at the smell of fish so I'm wondering how successful I'd be at taking this...

Funny, I was just going to post about measles and CLO. I will be supplemeting my toddler and taking some myself for my breastmilk (I have a 3wk old daughter). I read that Carlson's was a really good brand. They have a lemon flavored one (for DS), and capsules (for me). I'm wondering what dosage should be given. We have a measles outbreak in our country and DS is not vaxed, so I'm wondering if I should give him more just to give him a boost of the vitamin A and how much I should take?

Hopefully we'll both get answers to our questions. :-)

Yup Carlson's- that's what we give our boys and I am amazed that there is ZERO fish taste! Just tastes like lemon oil lol.
I give my boys 3&5 y/o a little less than a tsp once a day. Curious what doses others give

I take 1 tsp per day and 2-4 times per week I give DS a 1/4 tsp. I also get raw milk and pork both from pastured animals- so it has decent levels of vit. D. Pork that is strictly pastured is actually one of the best foods for vit. D.

Oh, and we use Carlsons too- the other brands don't have as much vit D compared to vit A.

Momma to G 12/06 A 2/09, AND ANNOUNCING... Welcome big boy! A 5/10/10 9 lbs 10 oz! We and had our 3rd UP/UC!

The best brands IMO are Blue Ice from Green Pastures (I give my children the fermented CLO), Dr Rons (made by Green Pastures I believe) and Radiant Life, Premier High Vitamin CLO.

This article provides the links of where these oils are available and dosing information and this article explains the manufacturing process and goes into the various brands of CLO. AFAIK, Carlson's falls under category 3:

Quote:
Fully cleaned and deodorized cod liver oil with synthetic vitamins added back in. Most of the cod liver oils on the market fall into this category. (You’ll need to check with the individual manufacturer to verify whether their cod liver oil falls in this category.) These vary in dose from about 1100 to 4600 IU vitamin A per teaspoon and 180 to 460 IU vitamin D per teaspoon.
Whereas, the ones listed above, are in category 4:

Quote:
Fully cleaned and deodorized, with natural vitamins added back in, standardized at 2340 IU vitamin A per gram (11,700 IU per teaspoon) and 234 IU vitamin D (1170 IU per teaspoon). This is the type of cod liver oil sold as Blue Ice and by Radiant Life and Dr. Ron’s UltraPure.
I give my children the fermented CLO because it is is higher in vitamin A and D, so they don't need so much at one time.

Category 4, it is one of the WAF recommended CLOs.

Can I get the cat. 4 stuff at CVS or another drug store? How about at whole foods or do I have to order online?

Again, I read a few and they promise to be free of toxins... I guess I'm just paranoid thinking who and how do they regulate this info?

The brands in cat. 4 are only available online, unless you have a buying club at your local Weston A Price Foundation chapter. The best store bought option is cat. 2, ie Garden of Life.

Do you have to have CLO to get the VItamin A? I take 4,000 mg of salmon oil a day....is this good enough? I'm also pregnant too so I'm afraid of OD'ing on the Vit. A...I already take a prental with low A.
