My 2.5 yr old has had watery diarrhea for a little less than a day now. I called the ped, who said to come in for a rotavirus culture. But he has NO OTHER SYMPTOMS. We just went out for a bike ride, he's happy and talking, not lethargic, no fever. I'm going to be doing some electrolytes and rice today, and I'd rather not take him in for a culture gathering (I don't want anything invasive at this point, the poor kid's bottom is very red and painful).

Is this enough? Would I do anything different than keep him hydrated if we found out it were rotavirus anyway? I'm just going to try to help him take it easy for a day or so, which is what I'd want to do if I had diarrhea.

(The other reason I don't want to take him in is because it is at 1:40, the middle of naptime, which I really don't want to interrupt today.)

Thanks Mamas!

I think the main concern with rotavirus is dehydration. However, where the diarrhea is the only symptom, I just wanted to ask if maybe his belly was hard and he was backed up at all? Sometimes diarrhea occurs when all that can get out is the loose, watery stuff. I would check for that and if not, then focus on giving him a lot of clear liquids today and maybe tomorrow, and then start some more gentle food to give his intestines a rest and time to heal.
