My 4 yr old son got poked in the eye Thursday night. I took him to the ER, they said no real damage, just a bruise. The next morning, a third of his eye was dark red. I made an appointment with the optomitrist (not an opthomologist like I wanted). He said there was a major bruise and some abrasions on the white of his eye, but no damage inside. Today his eye is almost completely red! I know it hurts (he tells me it does), but what can I do? The opthomologist refuses to see him till January because he is a new patient! and he is the only one within 150 miles!!!!

Any sugestions? Please!!!

I have had that happen - I had a horrible cold and tried to stop coughing because it hurt to cough. The force of the cough broke a blood vessel in my eye and most of the white in that eye turned dark red. There is really nothing that you can do, the red color will fade with time as will the discomfort. Maybe rinsing his eye with cool water will bring some relief or try the soothing eye drops that they sell over the counter at a pharmacy or target.

Hope he is feeling better soon!

Thanks, I am now breathing normal agaim. I tend to panic over some things.

How long did it take for your eye to clear up, or at least stop bothering you?

If I remember correctly it stopped bothering me within a few days but the white of my eye took a bit longer to return to normal. Before returning to white the red part gradually faded to a pale yellow, much like a regular bruise.

Hope you both are feeling 100% soon!
