I'm pretty sure I want to get this done, but I'm freaked out about the fact that the state keeps the blood. Does anyone know of any private labs in AZ (phoenix area) that will do these tests?

Hi Smidgin, Don't be "pretty sure" you want this test. You want this test. It not only screens for PKU but other birth defects. My daughter was born in December positive for PKU. When it comes to this disease time is brain.

It is extremely rare. You will probably never be affected by it or even meet anyone that has it. But if your child has it -you want to know. You can prevent extreme retardation, seizures and a host of other undesirable issue with diet. I will have a normal healthy daughter because of this test. It's not worth it to NOT get this test.

Here's a video about a girl who didn't get tested.

And here's an (award winning) series my local paper did on Newborn Screening.
When I read it in November I had no idea just a month later how much Newborn Screening would affect my life.

Be grateful for Newborn Screening. Don't think twice...
If you have any questions about it please ask me.
Congratulations on your babe!
