I can't believe it. I've been in the same position for the last 6 years and honestly love my job. I work for the county but it's a program funded with state and federal money. There were a ton of cuts within the county in November due to a huge budget deficit and I survived that no problem; we were assured that our program was safe. Then on the day before Christmas Eve, we were informed that the state cut the funding and the program is to be completely disbanded by December 31st. I will get my official layoff notice sometime early next week. I'm in a union so will likely be able to bump a less senior nurse out of her position but I get no say in where I go or what I'll be doing. It's based soley in seniority. Of all the nurses working in my program, I'm the second least senior which means any desirable positions will already be taken. I could be working anywhere in a 25 mile radius, working any hours. Right now I work 4 10-hr days which allows me to work a second job on Fridays. DH just took a huge demotion at work to stay employed, he now commutes 3 hrs per day instead of 1 and is making about 1/3 of the salary that he used to. Now this. I'm due to have this baby January 5th and I have no idea what job I'll be coming back to. I'm beyond devastated. What horrible timing. :

Oh I am so sorry. What's with the timing with all this junk? Not that it would be any better any other time of year, but really....the holidays?

I'm sorry to hear about your job situation and the timing is just the worst. Times are so tough right now but, they can't last, things will eventually work out.

So sorry to hear that. It does seem like lousy timing. I can't help but think, however, that it has happened for a reason......like maybe you will get a position that fits your life even better, or you will be able to balance family and work more easily with the new job. I certainly hope that is the case for you and your family. Hang in there! Thinking of you and wishing you the best!

Thanks for the support. I'm trying hard to stay positive. I'm grateful that I'll still have a job at all although I'm not looking forward to bumping someone else out of their own position. I just really wish the timing didn't suck so much and that things weren't so bad with DH's job. I can't believe we're about to add another baby to the mix. I also really hate to lose a job that I loved so much. It's a terrible deal for our patients too. We were one of the few free walk-in clinics left around.

Wow. I cant even believe how sad you must be right now. I will keep you and your family in my thoughts. Being in the health care field I see health care professionals taking such good care of every body but them self. Please, if you need that "something", if you feel so sad, please reach out to our mothering community or your other family or friends.

That does stink, why do they always do this around the holidays? Two in my family are facing similar problems just after the 1st so our holiday was spent trying not to stress out and be cheery. I hope it works out in a way that will work with your family!!

mom to Reaghan born underwater into midwife's hands 1/17/07 & Myra born surrounded by doulas and midwife at home 1/12/09. Birth Educator, and Photographer, Baby #3 Coming May 2013!

oh wow!! lots of cuts in WA....so sorry to hear...and yeah, that senior bumping thing sucks!

you were so helpful to me with info a while back...Remember?
Interestingly, I used that bad experience in a job interview with Early Head Start and I got the job I believe in part because of relaying that personal experience of being judged. This project I am working is heavy on attachment and breastfeeding mentoring...I'm impressed actually.

I feel lucky to have my new job and I hope you find just the right thing. The unknown is so scary, but sometimes can open up new doors. I'll be sending you good energy so that you can keep the worries at bay and birth that new little person

I'm sorry!

My "bright side" for you is that at least your job is very marketable in this economy. I don't always love being a nurse, but right now I love the secure feeling it provides me, KWIM?
