Okay, so since I've spent WAY TOO much time over the last 2 years on Trying to Conceive sites of various sorts (this being by far my favourite!!!), I forget that the initials and abbreviations we use can be incomprehensible to a newcomer. So I thought I'd start an English:TTC dictionary. If this seems helpful, maybe we could ask for a sticky. Dunno how you do that though!

Anyway, I thought I'd try to alphabetize. If anyone wants to add, why not cut and paste and add your own.

A

AF
Auntie Flo. Your period - a distinctly unwanted and unwelcome guest. Stick her in the spare room and ignore her. Hopefully she'll get the hint and not visit again.

B

BBT
Body Basal Temperature. Dig out your thermometer, insert it in orifice of choice (with minimum movement, remember) and plot your number on a pretty, pretty graph. You aren't supposed to keep trying until you get a number you like by the way.

BD
Baby Dancing (or Boogeying on Down, in some versions). A cutesy TTC version of DTD (see "D" for DTD). The horizontal mambo.

BFN
Big Fat Negative (Boo, Hiss):

BFP
Big Fat Positive (Yay, Hurray):

C

CD
Cycle Day. Keep a beady eye out for your fertile window. Are you waiting to O (see "O" for O) or waiting to know.

CM/CF
Cervical mucus or cervical fluid. Watch for the egg whitey stuff (see "E" for EWCM) and then terrify/enrapture (delete as applicable) your other half with your sexual prowess.

CP
Cervical Position. Choose a time of day and have a root around. Is it low, firm and closed (non fertile) or high, soft and open (fertile ... go, go sperm).

D

DPO
Days Post Ovulation. Characterized by an insane to desire to pee on anything that stands still long enough and then search for pink lines.

DTD
Doing the Deed. The bit most other halves seem to have the best grasp of. The fundamental factor for actually making a baby - and, yes, you do have to take your pyjamas off

E

EWCM
Egg White Cervical Fluid. Our favorite sort. Sperm love it. Discussions about how far you can stretch it are permitted here (but probably not at the dinner table) ... the further the better, by the way.

F

FF
Fertility Friend. The software which creates the lovely graphs many of us have in our signatures. Will monitor your fertility signs and put in a lovely, thick red line on ovulation day. Can sometimes feel a bit like "Fertility Foe" when said line does not appear. Chart stalking is positively encouraged here.

FMU
First Morning Urine. The strongest concentration of hormones. The time most likely to show up a BFP (see "B" for BFP)

H

HPT
Home Pregnancy Test. Choose from basic Internet Cheapies (See "I" for IC) or the deluxe all singing, all dancing digital version. Either way, we want pictures

I

IC
Internet Cheapies. The very sensitive, flimsy pregnancy tests which can be purchased via the world wide web. Often extra sensitive, they have the advantage of being extra easy to deface in the hunt for the faintest of faint positives.

O

O
Ovulation. Catch that egg as it bursts joyfully forth.

OPK
Ovulation Predictor Kit. Another stick to pee on. Hurray. Use when you think you're getting fertile. Even more exciting than an HPT in some respects because the lines *gasp* have to match. Plenty of fodder for staring until you're cross eyed.

P

PMA
Positive Mental Attitude. Oh so important and sometimes hard to come by. Lots of it to be found around here!

POAS
Pee on a Stick. There's a lot of this in TTC. Whoever knew our pee could be so interesting?

T

TMI
Too Much Information. No such thing in this small corner of the universe!

Okay, I'm out of inspiration. Any more after T? Feel free to add.

I thought of a couple! I'll add them here, and maybe you can edit your original later, Jill? Or they can stay here.

AFM - As for me, used when multiquoting a million other posts and finally getting to your own info.

LP - Luteal phase, the period of time between ovulation and your period, we always want it lengthened (like to 9 months!)

TWW - Two weeks wait, that hellish time between ovulation and finding out if you're pregnant. You'll never see these three letters together in the ridiculous testing thread.

Yes, expat, FRER had me for a long time, too.

To clarify:

FRER - First Response Early Response, the HPT with the lowest sensitivity so the ridiculous testers can justify that double line on 6 DPO.

Great list but you forgot TCOYF!

TCOYF
Taking Charge of Your Fertility. A book by Toni Wechsler. Considered by many to be the "TTC Bible," it explains the principles behind charting, including what BBTs are and what information they can offer you, as well as the varying types of CM and how to figure out your CP.

Also, since several of us have experienced infertility, I thought adding some basic infertility abbreviations might be helpful.

ART
Assisted Reproductive Technology. An umbrella term encompassing a variety of medications and procedures aimed at assisting a woman or couple with conception. (see IUI, IVF)

IF
Infertility. What qualifies one as "infertile" or suffering from infertility varies. Infertility can result from either problems with the female or the male or both and about 10% of couples that seek diagnosis end up with unexplained infertility. Often couples who TTC for one year without conceiving are said to be dealing with infertility. Some people go into TTC knowing that they have a condition that can interfere with conception. Some people who have suffered multiple miscarriages consider themsevles to be in this category, some in that same situation don't. In general, it is best to let the individual decide if this label fits.

IUI
Intrauterine Insemination. Around the time of ovulation, as determined by positive OPKs or US, a small catheter is fed up through a woman's cervix and either a sample of DH's "washed" sperm or washed sperm from a donor is injected into the uterus through the catheter.

IVF
In Vitro Fertilization. Often callled "in vitro," the exact drugs and proceedures used vary by couple and depend on what infertility problems led them to seek IVF in the first place. Generally, an IVF cycle starts with the suppression phase in which a woman takes drugs to suppress the body's natural hormones and cycle. Next is often the stimulation phase where a woman takes drug to stimulate ovulation or superovulation (ovulation of a larger number of ripe follices than normal). Once the follicles are mature, egg retrieval (ER) is done by using US and a long needle inserted through the vagina. The eggs are then either combined with the partner or donor's sperm and allowed to fertilize on their own, or, if there is a problem interferes with the sperm's ability to penetrate the egg's shell, individual sperm can be isolated and directly injected into the egg through a process call intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). Once fertilized, the embryos are allowed to grow for 3-5 days and then the best quality embryo or embryos are selected are returned to the mother's uterus in a procedure called embryo transfer (ET). Things can go wrong at any step in this process that can lead to cancellation of the IVF cycle and, often, a change in the IVF protocol for the next cycle.

MF or MFI
Male Factor Infertility. Accounts for 30-40% cases of infertility. There are multiple conditions that can lead to MF, a few include varicocele, antisperm antibodies (ASA), and congenital bilateral absence of the vas deferens (CBAVD). Bottom line, if you aren't conceiving and you don't know why make sure your DH has an SA ASAP. Side note: There is actually no abbreiviation for female factor infertility, probably because unless you state that you are dealing with MF, it is assumed that you have female factor infertility, sexist and misleading, but that's how it is .

PCOS
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. The most common endocrine disorder of women, PCOS can present with symptoms such as absent or irregular menses, obesity, excess hair growth (facial, etc.), acne, high cholesterol levels, hypertension, and IF. The cause is unknown but many current theories involve increased insulin resistance and treatment often involves dietary changes and metformin or other drugs that increase insulin sensitivity. There is tons of info on the web about PCOS, so feel free to google it for more info.

RE
Reproductive Endocrinologist. Colloquially referred to as "fertility docs." OBs can order several of the basic IF tests and some even provide basic IF treatment (i.e. clomid), but many people facing IF end up having to bring out the big guns. REs provide more extensive infertility testing and treatment, including IUI and IVF.

SA
Semen Analysis. A test to look for problems with the quantity, quality, motility, etc. of a man's semen. Given the varibility of semen from one day or week or month to the next, often a couple SAs done at different times are needed to really know if there is or isn't an issue with the semen that is interfering with conception. Transient issues that can lead to "bad" results include hot tub use or illness in the past ~3 months. This test can be ordered by OBs or REs.

I'll post more if I think of any others.

Yeah, RE got me too. I don't know if we have such things here in England the NHS? I know there are loss specialists but I don't think we use the term.

Great additions .. keep them coming!

Mischievium Thanks for the infertility ones. I did consider including those that I knew but it's better if someone who knows about it explains it.

Ok so what does BFP mean? I know it is related to a pregnancy test, but I can't figure it out.

It's up at the top. It means: Big Fat Positive
I've also seen : Been Fertile Positive

Either way it's good news

Just wanted to let you all know that we now have a wiki page dedicated to TTC After a Loss Resources which links to this thread, since we don't really have stickies anymore.

The wiki is pretty bare so far, so please feel free to add any resources you'd like! Now is an especially good time to add your resources to this (or even a new wiki) page because you'll automatically get entered into the contest for the chance to win a prize! orngbiggrin.gif
