Just saw in the weekly chit chat that some of us have already done our glucose tests. I wanted to let you all know that you can ask your doctor/mw/np about doing the "cornflake test." I told my np that I was not going to do the test because drinking the glucola made me so sick with my son and that I would rather take the risk. She said that they can also do a test where you eat a certain amount of cornflakes, milk and orange juice and then have your blood drawn 1 hour after that. I did it last week and have been wondering why they don't tell everyone that??? I'm sure it's just easier to give someone a bottle of glucola but you would think that they could at least tell people that there are alternatives!

Yeah!! But it depends on many things, not the least of which is your midwife/OB and how they feel about how precise the test needs to be. It never hurts to ask though. I know lots of mamas who were able to do a less disgusting test because they simply told their OB/etc. that they rarely consumed sugar to begin with.

My midwife is pretty laid back about it. She said I can eat a certain number of jellybeans instead of the glucose drink if I want, OR I can eat or drink anything else that has the same amount of sugar. The jellybeans adds up to 50g of sugar. So if I find something that has 50g of sugar, that'll work. She said she didn't care what form of sugar it was, either.

So I'm drinking one and a half organic Blue Sky ginger ales for my test.

I have learned that apparently the liquid sugars are processed faster or easier or something than the food-based ones. Not sure how that impacts the test results, but I figure since the original test is a drink, I'll stick with a drink form (plus it's easier for me to drink a big ginger ale than eat 27 jellybeans in one sitting -- blech).

The only thing I've been warned about is to avoid ingesting any OTHER sugars before or along with the ginger ale (or whatever chosen 50g of sugar), because that can mess the results up. So I'm planning to eat some hard boiled eggs or something (just protein) beforehand.

Last pregnancy I tried the jelly beans and just couldn't do it (I only managed to eat a few), so I ended up declining the test altogether, and my m/w was fine with it. I was a little younger, in good health, didn't eat a lot of sweets, and wasn't spilling sugar in my urine at all. This time I've gained more weight than before, am older, and figure I don't mind drinking ginger ale. My midwife is really wanting me to take the test, but is trying to make it as palatable as possible for me. I think that's awesome.

There are a couple different tests, and some require fasting beforehand (I think though that you should still be able to consume protein -- just no sugar).

I think it's awesome that your NP let you do a more palatable test. I can't imagine drinking that nasty orange goo, or eating a ton of candy (and I actually like candy! But not that much -- not at once).

I've heard some places give you a certain number of jellybeans.

I think it's just because the glucola is so easy to measure.

I wasn't allowed any "alternatives" because the test measures glucose, pure glucose is the best. Substitutes are less reliable and can give inaccurate results. Since there are no risk factors for GD and the complications can be serious, I don't feel comfortable skipping the test.

The pure glucose drink is really nasty. It's been known to make a lot of people sick (especially those of us who don't consume tons of sugar to begin with). This is why it's better there are alternatives.

The test itself is also pretty inaccurate (even with the glucose drinks). There are no real standards to how it is conducted and it is not uncommon to get false positives—which can be a very dangerous "side effect" if you don't have a doctor who bothers to looks at other symptoms and re-test—pressuring you to induce early (March of Dimes, btw, just gave the US a "D" for fetal deaths because of this kind of thing).

Even the test for adult diabetes has this issue. My stepdad recently was given a huge scare by his doctor who was "pretty sure" he had diabetes.

It made no sense. It wasn't in his genetics. I mean my grandmother did get it, but she was a smoker and she was in her 80s when it happened. Also, my stepfather is the biggest health food nut and never eats processed, sugar or fattening things.

They had to test him two other times (with way more extensive tests) before discovering he *didn't* have any diabetes.

I actually like the glucola drink. I definately can't do any alternatives since I'm high risk for developing type II diabetes when not pg. I go right to the 3 hour test. I already took it once at 14 weeks and will take it again in a couple weeks. I go right to the 3 hour test because it is more reliable than the 1 hour test. However, my dr is pretty sure that despite me passing the 3 hour GTT with my other two kids, that I likely had undiagnosed GD.

As far as drs inducing early due to false results, doctors shouldn't induce early in any woman with GD who has it controlled! The worse that should happen with a false positive is that you're put on the GD diet, which won't hurt anything. If the blood sugar levels are able to stay controlled on a GD diet, then the standard protocol is to treat the woman as if she doesn't have GD. (If a woman's GD is controlled with insulin however, then there is a LOT more monitoring and drs sometimes do induce early).

*The test for adult diabetes is pretty much the same, or at least the one I've taken is. The 1 hour screen is 50mg of glucola, the 2 hour non-pg one is 75mg, and the 3 hour GTT is 100mg.

Hmmm... this thread has me thinking that maybe I am needlessly worrying about my borderline results from last week. My midwife had me fast for 12 hours, then eat 2 eggs, toast with butter, french toast with syrup, a large glass of oj, and 20 jellybeans (I didn't have jelly beans so I ate 15 Skittles and an Airhead candy). This was way more sugar than I normally consume and I am not used to fasting for that long. Since then I have been pretty miserable trying to cut down on sugars, I mean I don't eat candy or anything to begin with, but just looking at the amounts of sugar in regular foods that I would consider healthy: cereal, yogurt, apples, my protein bars, etc. has me feeling like there is nothing to eat (and Im hungry!) Anyways, my results were borderline to begin with so I think I'm going to try not to stress about it too much, obviously avoiding tons of sweets (which is hard with the holidays!) but Im not going to alter my regular diet to avoid all sugars. My mw didn't seem too concerned either. Ok, kinda thinking out load there...

I'm doing it on Thursday too. My MW told me not to eat anything that morning, drink 10 oz of purple grape juice at 8:30 a.m., and she'd arrive at 9 a.m. The glitch is that suddenly I have an appointment to check out a preschool for DS at 7:30. I won't have eaten anything, I'll have been up earlier than usual, and I'll be taking him to that appointment and then dropping him off at daycare (which I don't usually do), all before I see the MW. I imagine I'll be gulping down the juice on my walk back from DS' daycare, and dizzy with hunger before that. Does anyone know if I can drink water before I drink the grape juice?

In my last pregnancy I drank the glucola. It was not so bad. I do eat sugar regularly though. The only thing that really annoyed me was that they took my blood pressure after I had drunk it, when I was feeling all jumpy, and told me sternly that my blood pressure was unusually high that week. I really wonder how people can be medical practitioners with so little intelligence.

I negotiated with my midwife to do a 1 week reading since I have a glucometer. I have to do fasting and one hour after each meal for a week so they can put the results in thier file. I always fail my 1hr glucose, but that 3hr test is torture! I refuse that everytime after that first time. I passed that 3hr test, so the next time, I offered to skip the test and go directly to counseling. I learned so much and got the glucometer and avoided the 3 hr torture test.

Anyway, it's another option if you've got access to a glucometer.

Citykid, water is fine. And actually, anything without sugar should be fine, I'd think too (so protein -- like boiled eggs or something). But I'm not 100% sure on that.

Water is fine before the 1 hour but not before the 3 hour. I wouldn't do the protien without talking to your midwife. Protien and fiber slow down the rise of blood sugar so they could make your blood sugar not go as high. If you're getting tested one hour later, then I'd just stick to the juice unless you're told otherwise. If you're getting tested two hours after eating, then the rules and cut-offs are different. (Supposed to be below 120 two hours after eating a normal meal. But below 140 after 50grams of sugar).

I had my test this morning, and I opted for the lemon lime Glucola. The bottle is fairly small, and it just tastes like flat Sprite. This is my 3rd pregnancy that I have taken the test for, and I have opted for the Glucola each time.

I brought a bottle of water with me to the lab, and they said I could not drink it before the test because it would dilute the solution in my bloodstream. They typically have trouble finding my veins, so the prick hurt!

I have had some weight issues with this pregnancy, and an ultrasound yesterday showed that the baby is measuring two weeks ahead of my due date (which I know is correct b/c I was charting.) Even at two weeks ahead, it is 95th percentile for growth.

My first was born 1 week early at 9 lbs, and my second 3 weeks early at 8 lbs, so it looks like I'm on track for another large baby. Hopefully no gestational diabetes though.

One hour. The more I talk to people about this the more random and inaccurate it all sounds! I thought I was lucking out not having to do the standard glucola test but now I'm not so sure. It seems a little more straightforward at least. I'm not stressing about it though and neither is my mw. Next time (if there is a next time) I think I'll pass on the test altogether.

When it comes to whether or not to eat before doing the glucola and test, my midwife said fasting was up to me. She said that basically they can't tell a pregnant woman not to eat, but she would suggest not eating before if I plan to do it in the morning. She said if I do eat, then it would be smart of me not to eat anything with sugar in it or anything that immediately turns into sugar. So, no breads or milk... a bowl of cereal would be out.
I plan to eat an egg for breakfast in the morning before I go.. I will probably go about midday, that is what fits into my schedule. My SIL said when she doesn't eat anything before drinking it then it makes her pretty nauseous.

I'm a little concerned about doing the test. I had a donut for breakfast yesterday, first thing of the day that I ate. Within 30 minutes of eating it, I could definitely feel when my blood sugar spiked way up. My heart was beating really fast and I felt like I couldn't catch my breath... like my body was just working really hard to process all that sugar. That lasted about 45 minutes. Then, I felt like I just bottomed out and wanted to go right to sleep. I'm trying to think positive, but if that drink does anything to me like the donut did I wouldn't be surprised if I don't score so hot on the one-hour test.

I'm opting out of the test. I may look at some gestational diabetes diets for some ideas of eating more healthily, but I really think I do well already, and I'm NOT going to start introducing artificial sweeteners or limiting fruit.

That's not your blood sugar going UP you feel, it's more than likely you feeling it going DOWN. Eating a donut for breakfast is nothing but sugar (I love donuts for breakfast, lol) and it can cause your body to make too much insulin lowering your blood sugar too much. This is what happens in people who tend to be hypoglycemic, which I tend to get when pg. I've been a little more normal this time, even higher for a few wks, it's all very strange. I took the test w/ my last baby and my one hr # was 66, 130-140 is generally the cutoff if that tells you how LOW my blood sugar was from having such a sugar rush, I declined the test this time.

This is what I did as well, it gives a MUCH more complete picture of what's going on anyways. The week I did it though, I was actually testing higher than my norm. 2 wks of that and I'm back to normal so my body was just going through an adjustment period and is fine now. I wonder how many moms are dx w/ GD who are actually just in an adjustment period like I was? I go again on Monday so I'm testing again to show I've gone down.

I don't know - but I've never been allowed to drink water before the three hour, and I've taken it three times now. On other boards, I've noticed the same thing - that women aren't allowed water before the three hour before or during the test.

So, my glucose test this morning said 126. My midwife said it was fine, but that I should "watch what I eat." I pressed her for some specifics, and she was really contradictory. First she said that chicken with steamed vegetables is a good meal, so that sounds like she's telling me to eat no carbs at all. Then she says pasta with alfredo sauce is a bad idea because of the fat - what's fat got to do with it? Then I asked her how often it would be okay to eat dessert, like once a week? And she said, "Oh no, most people have something sweet every day, I'm just saying that I'd rather you have a cookie than a big bakery cupcake." What?? And to top it all off, she suggested that an ideal dessert is a bowl of berries with freshly made whipped cream. Berries. In November. Hello?

I love my MW, I really do, but it seems nutrition is not her specialty. Btw, I measured "on the small side of normal," as she put it, and have gained 16 pounds so far.

Well. Any of you ladies have any more rational advice about diet for a glucose reading of 126?

In my eyes, you are lucky. You tested below 130, which is the threshold for determining if you are at risk for gd. I would just say to watch your sugar intake, since you are borderline.

I just got my results back yesterday, and I tested at 209. Yikes! And I fasted beforehand, so they are confident I have gd.

This is my 3rd pregnancy, and I have no prior experience with this. I'm awaiting a call from my midwife to set up an appt. with a perinatologist for nutrition counseling and to find out next steps.

Not good news anytime, but especially not right before the holidays. But I can do anything for 3 months, and if it ensures a healthy baby, I'll do it.

I wouldn't even bat an eye at 126. You should be under 120 'ideally' 2 hrs after eating, so 126 at 1hr is fine. I wouldn't worry about anything at all, just make healthy choices, but we should all be doing that.

126 is great! Most drs use below 140 as passing, though some use 130.
I have been on a diabetic diet since Jan - and my gain is still far more than average. I find that I do need to make sure to get enough fat. Getting enough fat actually helps fill me up better as well as seems to help my blood sugars. Protien is key, but I was surprised that high protien/low fat didn't work nearly as well as high protien/medium fat.

I do eat ice cream sometimes - but it's Breyer's carb smart. I can't eat regular pasta and have to drastically limit even 100% whole grain pasta. So I eat Dreamfield's low carb pasta. I have to limit my fruits even and certain veggies like carrot sticks. But my diet is much stricter than most GD diets. My suggestion would be to eat carbs but make them whole grains and eat protien at the same time. Also, check the fiber. Fiber helps blood sugar levels too.

Mine went fine on Thursday. I had a small water bottle of "fruit punch" type of drink. I felt sweaty and jittery for about 15 minutes, but was ok after that. They will call me with my results.

My midwife does the 50g carbohydrate load test. I had 2 eggs, 2 slices of toast, 8oz milk, 4 oz juice, and confirmed by the labels that I was getting 50g of carbohydrates, within a few grams. 2 hours later, they did a little finger stick, and my sugar was fine. Same as with my son. I did the glucola with my first, and nearly passed out, or vomited, or both simultaneously, and my blood sugar tested pretty much exactly the same as it did with my son and with this baby.

I am at risk for gestational diabetes because I am at risk for Type II diabetes. I am glad to be able to get reliable testing results without having to subject my system to 50g of straight sugar syrup, with nothing to temper it. I don't do that at any other time- why would I make myself sick while pregnant?

I think my results from the glucola were around 107; after eating the healthy breakfast, it was just under 80, I think. Each time I was told my results were great, not even borderline.

If my appointment is at 2, and I'll be drinking my ginger ale at 1, then can I really not have any sugary things at all, all day beforehand? How long does it take for the sugar to get out of your system? I just realized I had two meals to eat only protein for and ick -- I don't want that many boiled eggs, as will be stinky all day.

What else could I eat for breakfast and/or lunch that has zero sugar? Or can I have a normal breakfast with juice and whatnot, and then eat only the eggs for lunch?

I really, really, really want to pass the GD test and be done with it. The holidays are coming up and I love to bake...

Suggestions? Thanks, mamas!

Ugh nighten, I don't know. Can you reschedule? I'd really try hard to avoid sugar all day. Maybe you could have pork chops or something for lunch, just so you don't have to eat that many eggs?

Today my midwife just did a random sugar test, just for fun. It was 143! But, I had literally JUST eaten a big plate of dessert a friend's house before my appt. And I FELT bad, as if I had just eaten a ton of sugar. She just laughed and winked and said, "we won't write that number down."

I'll do another random one with my hospital midwife in a few weeks, I'm sure, but I'll not eat sugar that day and so it won't be a problem.

Okay...this makes thread #4...I really am getting off now...

Okay I just found out that protein breaks down into 50% glucose and could skew the test, so that's out.

I'm going to eat a light breakfast of carbs and protein and hope it gets out of my system before my test, and skip lunch until after my appointment. Which will suck, but there you have it.

Worst case scenario, I'll eat a piece of cheese for lunch.

I'm finally starting to understand why they have people fast before these tests, but I still think the notion of making a pregnant woman fast is horrid. Really. Anyway....
