I have an artificial heart valve that has developed a stenosis and because of this my heart is working overtime. SO, my beautiful home birth has been transformed into a hospital birth with an induction happy dr. Waaaaaah!!
He says he wants to induce me basically so he can be in charge, is the way I see it> Unfortunately, he is the only dr. at the hospital who specializes in heart problems in pregnancy, so I am basically stuck with him.
He also told me that if I'm not dealing well enough with the pain, I will have to have an epidural. My heart will be working too hard if I'm not relaxing with the pain. He told me that giving birth naturally would totally be preffered to a c-section and there's not reason I can't avoid an epidural as long as I'm relaxed. Ummmm.... and he wants to induce me with Pit. Does this make ANY sense?
I go see him on Friday and am going to seriously argue my point, the end of the discussion being "Well, this is my blood and I am the consumer here, and I am not going to be induced. I will come into the hospital as soon as I know I'm in labor." That is, unless he comes up with some reason that would actually make sense, which I highly doubt
I'm SO SO SO SO bummed to be thrown out of my beautiful home birth vision into the madness on the medical birthing establishment, and be forced to fight for my rights to give birth naturally.

Oh no! I'm so sorry. I don't remember about last time but did you have the same issues then?

Who was going to attend your homebirth this time? I understand needing to be monitored because of your heart issue, but inducing is a stupid idea, given that the pitocin will make it much harder for you to be relaxed throughout labor. Good grief.

I'm so sorry.

Would something like Hypnobabies help? Is there another hospital you could go to with a different doctor? What about a doula?

Bless your heart. I wish I could help.

my first birth was a birth center water birth.

There is no other option because of my health insurance. I'm just hoping to be able to talk some sense into this guy

Honestly, I'm surprised that with your cardiac history you're a homebirth candidate at all! I have a prosthetic aortic valve, as well, and as much as I would have love MW assisted homebirths, I have had three natural-but-monitored hospital births with midwives from the Perinatologist's practice.

I'm sorry that you won't be having the birth you envisioned! Feel free to PM me if you need to-- I'd love to talk to another heart-valve mamma...

Health and peace

Well, I can understand that, but I still don't understand why he wants to induce. That to me is so counter to the whole notion he stressed about you needing to relax in labor as much as possible.

What if you went along with it all but didn't show up for the induction?

this is what i was thinking. wouldn't going into labor naturally and laboring as naturally as possible be the safest thing for you?

forcing your body into labor before it is ready would just add stess to your body.. and to you.. wouldn't it?

and how would an epidural help? I'm really confused by this whole thing. it would seem that as naturally and relaxed as possible would be the safest approach no?

and if that is what you decide...and you are quite sure the best thing for you and your baby is not to induced... well... i would probably go along with it until it got really close and then tell him to shove it and go to the hospital like anyone else would... when you are in labor and good and ready to go.
