hey out here everyone: so i'm on my second bout of v. light spotting. i'm 10 wks on wed. i've read everything ever written or posted on mdc about it by now and i seem to have all the *facts* i would need to stay calm about it. it's def brown and just teensy bits, i do feel sort of crampy, but nothing serious, and the color is not changing; it doesn't seem to be getting worse... etc. etc.

at wk 8 it came after sex went away in about 3 days. this time it started after a v. gentle yoga class on sat morning. the thing is this: i'm tempted to have an u/s just to ease my mind, but i haven't even been to the mw yet! (though i had my prenatal care at the same birth center in 2004--we ended up doing an uc but that's another story...) my first appt is on wed and i suppose i could just wait it out until i see someone then... on the other hand, i could try to call my gp and see if she'll point me to a lab for the u/s before wed. i don't know what to do... and i don't even know how to get a u/s except through a dr.

my gut tells me just to wait it out and let it be either way, but i would also love some reassurance from technology. any thoughts (general good vibes also welcome)?

I would go for the u/s just for peace of mind. I have been through a missed miscarriage, though, so I am very nervous at the beginning of all my pregnancies. I had no signs of miscarriage other than a little brown when wiping one day. All my symptoms went away too when the baby stopped developing, but at the time, I just thought I was going to be lucky and not have to suffer through morning sickness as long.

It sounds to me that you have absolutely nothing to worry about!!! I would just go for the u/s for peace of mind. Peace of mind is worth ALOT!!!

I had this happen last pregnancy and it was from two things:

1. It was about the time of my second missed period, and
2. I was severely constipated and that can apparently cause old blood to get knocked loose sometimes, if things get really crowded in there.

But exercise and sex can also do it for sure.

As long as it's brown and very light, I wouldn't stress, but I would also get the u/s to make sure everything's okay. That's what I did last time and I was very relieved after seeing the baby's heartbeat.

I would call your mw--she probably works with a lab and can call in a u/s for you. Even though mws don't preform them they still need to use them and will be able to get it done for you without going through a dr.

Me too--around the time when I was expecting my first and second "missed" period, after sex, when constipated, etc. Get the U/S. You'll feel better, and less stress will be good for both of you.

thanks so much for the responses. this has been a drag...

I finally got through to the mw who brought me in for a consult this afternoon. no luck finding the baby's heartbeat, which is distressing to me, but mw did not think this was a big deal because i have a retro-verted uterus (who knew!) and am only 9w3d. according to her, my cervix and uterus look and feel right on target. she saw the irritated cells on my cervix, which explains the spotting of old blood. i opted for the u/s anyway (over the hcg level tests that would take 48 hrs). hopefully i can get it done tomorrow to confirm life in there. i'm trying to be at once optimistic and yet prepared for the worst. ugh. i stopped and got some crampbark tincture just to make me feel better. cross your fingers for us!

Here you go, hon ...

Blessings and prayers all over you and your baby. I'm trying to resist going the heartbeat via Doppler until 12w or so ... our midwife wouldn't even attempt it, saying that the disappointment would be worse than the not knowing either way. You baby is probably tucked snug at the back of your uterus, with his or her little hands hugged over his or her little heart.

i kept this image with me all night last night and it felt wonderful. and you were right. tucked snug. only the little heart wasn't beating... sadly, we lost our baby weeks ago. i wish you all had been right about the spotting. in this case it was indicative of the miscarriage to come. the u/s was great advice -- it let me find out sooner than later.

thank you for sharing this space where we briefly celebrated the babe's sweet short life. here's wishing you all the very best. xo

I am so very sorry! I understand your grief very well. It's a hard, hard thing to see a perfectly formed tiny baby in there with no heart beating. It's most certainly a sight I will never forget. I will pray for rest and peace for you during this time of grieving!
