I'm new here and have a lot to learn. I'm glad I found this site and hope that I can make some changes in my current ways as a result of what I learn.

We delayed the MMR for my son, who is now 2.5. My pediatrician is pushing hard to get him his MMR. She is truly concerned about my son catching one of these diseases, but I can't help think that there is something else motivating her to pressure us for this vaccination (a whole other thread, though).

Anyway, on to my question, he was scheduled to get his MMR and the day before he came down with an ear infection. Pediatrician put him on antibiotics, I delayed it but the infection became intense and we went ahead with the antibiotics. He finishes his antibiotics tomorrow evening and I was told to make an appointment for the MMR for next week. I'm concerned about giving him the MMR so close to when he had antibiotics and was sick. I have been giving him probiotic supplements throughout -- but I'm still concerned. Is it reasonable to be concerned, or am I just being overly cautious?

Thanks in advance for reading this and I look forward to some responses.

I wouldn't vax a child who had been sick or on antibiotics in the preceding month.

Try reading "How to Raise a Healthy Child In Spite of Your Doctor". Since you said you were concerned about her motivations for pushing the vaccine, this book will give you some great insight. It only took a few days to get it from Amazon (or free at the library).

FWIW, my dd had mumps, and it was no big deal. She had a slightly puffy face for about a week. That was it.

Definitely do not give the MMR shortly after a course of antibiotics. Vaccines are not emergency medicine.

Use the delay to do some research on vaccination and on the diseases.

Good luck.

vaccine injury is preventable
prevent it (if the government still allows you to say no...)

Whatever you decide, please do not give a vaccine just because your ped "tells" you to do it. You are the parent. You make the decisions.

Wife to DH (06/10) and Mummy to DD (07/08).

If nothing else ask your ped to sit down and explain why to you. If they aren't willing to do that.... I would look for a ped who would!

My ped was doing the same thing at last wbv. I asked (this was before doing a lot more research) " What could happen to him if he did catch measles?" (she was throwing the rise in measles argument at me). She went kind of blank, looked at me and stuttered out " is really bad for pregnant women to get..." Right. Well, I don't think my son will ever be a pregnant woman, so...
I went home and got on a very pro vaccination website and looked up all the diseases, since then, I have never thought about even entertaining the idea of the MMR again.
*Let me point out that this is where I started to read about the diseases, since then I have found many other articles, books etc. to support my decision. One of which was an episode of The Brady Bunch where the kids caught measles and were all home from school. noone died. noone was even afraid of dying. just sick and home from school...
One more thing...I find it very disturbing that Merck has quit making the separate shots and that a parents ONLY option now is the MMR.
Also, to answer your question, no I would not get the shot after antibiotics.
