My 15 month old son has had two doses of DTaP, one given at 12 months and one last week. These are the only two vaccines he's received thus far. Our pediatrician recommends DTaP Hib and prevnar because he feels that these are the diseases our children would be most likely to actually catch and suffer potential complications.
Prior to receiving DTaP, our son had the occasional cold and he'd had H1N1, and that was it. Beginning in December - so about 3-4 weeks or so after his first dose of DTaP - he developed a nasty snotty nose, sneezing, cough, etc. All of the snot that he inevitably rubbed on his face as he wiped his nose resulted in eczema-like patches around his face. He basically had your typical cold symptoms, except that it lasted and lasted and lasted. I developed a similar condition right before Christmas, minus the red patches on the face but with the addition of itchy eyes and assumed I'd caught his cold. I then decided that I probably had a cedar pollen allergy and my nightly runs outdoors were making me pretty sick. My son hadn't been out in the pollen much though, but I assumed he had a cedar allergy too.
I have gotten slowly better, as has he. In fact, his nose and face were almost completely clear last week and his cough was almost gone. Then I took him for his 15 month well baby visit and opted for a second dose of DTaP, since he seemed to handle the first one okay. He cried off and on a lot that evening, but I didn't think much of it because he has a tooth coming in. The next morning, it was snot overload. He has sneezed repeatedly all weekend, his wet cough is back, his nose runs constantly with a thick yellowy-green snot, and his poor little face is all red and blotchy again. I've since read that children vaccinated with DTaP may be more likely to develop asthma and allergies later on. Does this sound like a potential reaction to you? Or am I just being a paranoid mama? My allergies are fine this weekend, btw.
In the interest of full disclosure I do not vax at all. With that being said, I don't think you can really tell if what is going on is a reaction or not.
I do think that no child should be vaccinated when they are recovering from any illness, especially one that took so long to get under control. When one is recovering from an illness, the immune system is working in overdrive. Taxing it further with attenuated viruses and a plethora of chemicals will do nothing to faciliate healing, but may in fact induce a setback IMO. Persoanlly I think that is likely what happened to your DC. Hope he feels better soon.
If the people let government decide what foods they eat and what medicines they take, their bodies will soon be in as sorry a state as are the souls of those who live under tyranny." Thomas Jefferson.
I think it's more likely a result of a trip to the doctor's office, personally. We've come to expect a respiratory illness after any amount of time in a pediatrician's waiting room, whether we get a vax or not. Honestly, kids just get sick.
