Actually we weren't debating we were giving VETERAN MILITARY information. As in we've been through this and know what we're talking about. How it's handled is not a debate. True facts are not a debate. If someone came on who had never been in the military and tried to argue that it was really easy to move to Japan even after all the problems they have had over there, without vaccinations I would tell them they were lying. And as someone who still works with the military I think I have to be honest about expectations when I know how it actually works out. Telling the OP the truth is not being "debatey". It's being fair. And telling her why the Military does what they do... is again being fair and honest. I'm not going to tell her ways to sneak around the powers that be, because that could ultimately get her spouse in trouble and cause undo stress to herself and her family.

HeyHey Monkey, I'm sorry this thread with your legitimate question and responses was highjacked by members who want to debate the merits of vaccines rather than engage with your question. This board IS a place that supports non-vaccinators, but we also have plenty of members who vaccinate. As a new member, you aren't expected to know the "right" place to post and I'm sorry that others belittled you.

I grew up in the military as my dad was career Air Force and I know how hard it is to buck the system without repurcussions. I admire your resolve. It would be great to have an article on the site about the military and vaccine exemptions. Please keep us posted on your journey. Feel free to PM me to keep me up to date.

Oh no our answers were legitimate.  I'm a DV and still work with the military so I decided to ask my friends in Okinawa currently or on their way.  This is what was said

the only required shot for Japan is Hep B and Japanese Encephalitis are highly recommended HOWEVER  look below please...

(found this on the internet)  Can I link it  Peggy since it's to another forum for military forum of people who actually know what is going on now?

And from someone who really knows...

I'm the overseas screener here at Camp Pendleton, California.  There are two instructions concerning immunizations when transfering overseas.

BUMEDINST 6230.15A, 3-3, a, and MILPERSMAN 1300-302, 7, c.

The BUMEDINST basically says that dependents going overseas have to have immunizations as recommended by CDC.  It does not list any situations for exemptions.  The MILPERSMAN basically says that service members or dependents can only go overseas at the discretion of the gaining command.  In other words, if the gaining medical facility says you or your child have to have certain immunizations in order to be approved for travel than you need to have them done or you won't be able cleared for travel with your spouse.

Other things required, dental, pap smears ( oh fun) and any other medical issues must be taken care of here or in Guam.  So... you can try to buck the system or you can look further than "I hope it works out for you".

Because it's not worth getting into a mess when it's not needed.

OP please google Okinawa Hai Society.  The women there can help you a little more.

Thanks, Imakcerka, this is good advice specific to what HeyHeyMonkey was wanting. Yes, you can link to the other forum and the Okinawa Hai Society sounds good too. Will you link to that too? Should you PM HeyHeyMoneky with this info? Let's see if she comes back.

So, you're in Camp Pendleton then. Beautiful place. Don't you agree that this would be a good article? There are the straight forward requirements, but do you agree that the real issue is how this all comes down for the military person? I remember that my dad would get points on his record if his family screwed up, like when I had a car accident right in front of the MP station, when I was 16. Would asking for exemptions reflect badly on the military person depending on his situation and who the commander is?

Sorry, but what is DV?

Disabled Veteran

And I'm near a different base now.  That information I left for the OP was from someone out of Camp P.  And yes family can still cause issues for the Military member.

Posted, deleted, but I am going to say something.

My dh was active duty for a while, and things certainly can *seem* to be cut and dry.  And, it can be argued, various offices are really bad at communicating effectively with the spouse.  I can't tell you how often I've been round and round with the housing office.  Every person I talk to tells me something different, and they all cite "policy".  I'm glad to be done with that mess.

There's a difference between asking for clarification from the person who really has the authority to make a decision, and bucking the system.  No need to be dramatic.
