Italian Court Rules MMR Vaccine Caused Autism

Valentino Bocca was given an MMR shot in 2004, at the age of 15 months. According to his parents, the change in his behavior was immediate. That same night he refused to eat, and he developed diarrhea during the night. It quickly went downhill from there. Within days he was no longer able to put a spoon to his mouth, and he spent nights crying in pain. His parents immediately suspected the vaccination, but were told this was “impossible.” Valentino progressively regressed, and received the diagnosis of autism a year later.

In the final analysis, the Italian Health Ministry disagreed with the initial conclusion of the pediatrician, conceding that the vaccine was at fault.

As a result, a court in Rimini, Italy recently awarded the Bocca family a 15-year annuity totaling 174,000 Euros (just under $220,000), plus reimbursement for court costs, ruling that Valentino “has been damaged by irreversible complications due to vaccination (prophylaxis trivalent MMR)i.” According to a featured article in the UK newspaper, The Independentii, about 100 similar cases are now being examined by Italian lawyers, and more cases may be brought to court.

“Luca Ventaloro the family lawyer, said yesterday: “This is very significant for Britain which uses, and has used, an MMR vaccine with the same components as the one given to Valentino.

It is wrong for governments and their health authorities to exert strong pressure on parents to take children for the MMR jab while ignoring that this vaccine can cause autism and linked conditions.” The number of autism cases has risen sharply since the 1970s, with one in 64 British children affected,” The Independent reportsiii .

Also,

  • Two virologists have filed a federal lawsuit against Merck, their former employer, alleging the vaccine maker overstated the effectiveness of their mumps vaccine, which may have cost the US government hundreds of millions of dollars over the past decade. They claim they “witnessed firsthand the improper testing and data falsification in which Merck engaged to artificially inflate the vaccine's efficacy findings"
  • Chatom Primary Care has also filed a federal antitrust class action lawsuit against Merck, alleging Merck went to great lengths to manipulate test procedures and falsifying results to prop up fraudulent efficacy claims, thereby maintaining its monopoly on the MMR vaccine
  • These two lawsuits couldn’t come at a more precarious time for Merck, as the Italian Health Ministry recently conceded the MMR vaccine caused autism in a now nine-year old boy—albeit this news has been effectively censored in the US
  • A recent review of the varicella (chickenpox) vaccination program in the U.S. concluded that the vaccine has not proven to be cost-effective; increased the incidence of shingles; failed to provide long-term protection from the disease it targets―chicken pox―and; is less effective than the natural immunity that existed in the general population before the vaccine. Vaccine efficacy was found to have declined well below 80 percent by of 2002.

Bear in mind, this is a legal case, not a scientific or medical study. Just because some lawyers managed to convince a judge (who probably does not have any medical or scientific training) that the MMR vaccine caused this boy's autism, that doesn't prove anything one way or another about if it really did cause his autism or about if it does so in other children. We also don't know if there were other factors at work with this particular kid, like that case of the girl with the mitochondrial disorder.

It's certainly interesting to know that this case exists, but I think we need to bear in mind what it is--a legal case. It's not medical or scientific. Oh, I'm sure medical/scientific evidence was presented, but a. the judge might not know how to interpret said evidence and b. it's still a legal case first and foremost, and the standards that are used are going to be qualitatively different.

Erigeron, that's a very good point; the US news media is CONSTANTLY holding up legal cases as "proof" that vaccines don't cause autism.

There is a monumental double standard in the media and iin the medical community, where "proof" in a legal case only applies when it supports vaccine sales, and where correlation DOES equal causation when it supports profits for the pharmaceutical industry.

That's an extremely vague statement. Got any specific examples to back it up? I agree that legal proof should not equal medical proof, whichever way the proof goes, but I don't see the medical community holding up legal cases as a standard. And the media and the medical community are two very separate groups.

The medical community says "correlation does not equal causation" out of one side of its collective mouth, regarding vaccines. But medications are recommended for practically every minor ailment, without any proof that those medications cure or even help the ailment, and with no concern for possible side effects.

You can go to your local Target and stare at shelves upon shelves of cold medicines (that do not cure the common cold, but probably help to spread it), acid blockers (that don't address the root cause of the problem, but merely block it), fever reducers (that most people use at the first hint of a fever, even though in most minor illnesses, the fever is there to do a job), etc.

Or you can look at the ever-increasing number of people of all ages, including TODDLERS, who are prescribed psych meds, and you can look at the ever-increasing studies showing that such meds are ineffective.  Yet doctors prescribe them routinely to people who do not have a psychiatric illness.  Working mom, exhausted from trying to balance the equivalent of two full-time jobs?  Must be depressed, give her an anti-depressant!  Elderly person who just entered a nursing home, leaving behind her own home, her independence, her neighbors, and a lifetime of memories?  Yup, let's give her an antidepressant, too!  Healthy, active 4-year-old with overly-permissive parents?  Must need Ritalin!  Middle-aged woman with undiagnosed B12 deficiency (caused by long-term use of Prilosec), experiencing tingling hands and feet?  Let's invent a new "disease," call it "Restless Legs Syndrome," and have her take Lyrica for the rest of her life! Oh, but we won't even wonder what her serum B12 is.

Vaccine reactions? Bunk!  We don't care if they were reported to VAERS!  ANYONE can report to VAERS! Just because they had a (rash) (seizure) (high fever) (bowel disorder) (arthritis) (lupus) (MS) (autoimmune disorder) (Guillaine-Barre Syndrom) that started immediately after their flu shot doesn't mean it ACTUALLY caused that reaction!  But if they don't get the flu after getting the flu shot, well, that's because the flu shot CAUSED them not to get the flu--whether or not they were actually exposed, or whether or not they minimized their chances by washing their hands before eating, or...

As far as most of the medical community is concerned, correlation does not equal causation--except when it sells drugs.

If an Italian court ruled that MMR did NOT cause the autism it would have been ALL OVER THE NEWS. We have blinders on us in this country.

Not to mention the fact that we can't even GO to court for vaccine injuries in this country because the companies are immune.

But honestly - all I have to do is look at my two incredibly healthy, completely unvaccinated daughters compared to my *very* partially vax'd one who is the sickest child I had. I am about to take her to FSM therapy to help with the effects of the vaccines.
