We don't vaccinate at all.  Sunday my 5 yr. old smashed his thumb pretty badly and I am not sure if I should be concerned about tetanus.  He was in a lot of pain for the rest of the evening but the next morning he said it didn't hurt any more but he could still feel it (so it's not numb).  It's still swollen and very full of blood on and all around the nail, on the underside of his thumb (huge blood blister) and it just looks awful.  We do not think it's broken and he can move it a little.  It didn't bleed Sunday at all but did a little bit yesterday and a little bit today.  I didn't even think about tetanus until tonight.  Seems I've read before that an injury such as this would be cause for concern.  I haven't been on this forum in quite some time but I wanted to pop on and get some opinions.  Thanks so much.

Tracy

I would just keep it clean and not worry about it. It's not a gaping wound or a puncture and I'm sure you cleaned it after it happened. I can't remember the time frame but I think you are beyond the window of the vaccine preventing anything anyway.

I wouldn't be concerned about tetanus either from what you are describing.

Poor kid!

I wouldn't really worry about tetanus either. I'd keep soaking it in warm salt water though to suck out any kind of infection, and it kind of kills the pain as well.

Also be prepared for the nail to fall (peel) off. It will be completely painless, like peeling skin off after a sunburn but just so it doesn't get caught in something and rip off in a horrifying way, try to keep an eye on it. It will look like it's still attached because the sweat under the nail will keep it suctioned to the nail bed, but you might want to wiggle it every once in a while to see if it's loose yet.

I've become an expert on the subject since crushing all 8 of my fingers in my garage door twice now lol bigeyes.gif

I hope his thumb feels better soon!

Thank so much.  I apologize if I posted this in the wrong area.  He smashed it playing with daddy's car jack (after being told many times to leave daddy's tools alone...sigh) but he was such a trooper.  I haven't taken him into the doctor because... well... we do that as little as possible.  It looks like it's going to be ok but we are keeping an eye on it.  I was just a little concerned about the whole tetanus thing. It's the only one that makes me a little nervous from time to time but we've still not vaccinated.  Thanks for your replies!

This may be of interest to you. It was posted in the Im not vaccinating forum in response to a post similar to yours (mom worrying about a specific wound in unvaxed child)
