It seems like so many media articles feature the same photo of a baby staring at a needle while it's being injected into the arm.

Aren't these injections supposed to go into the thigh, at least for babies? I thought I heard that there is a lower chance of a reaction this way. If you vax at all, what does your provider do?

I don't know why, but that photo always bugged me.

Leg for the kids when they are little. Vaccinations I've got in memory go in the arm as did the flu shot my 6 yo got last winter.

Mother of two living in UK. Daughter (2007) born in USA, son (2010) born here. I'm pro natural birth, midwife care, breastfeeding, co-sleeping, baby wearing and a keen advocate of cloth diapering. I'm a full time working research scientist (physical sciences) and I'm pro-vaccine.

The U.S. Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommends that intramuscular vaccinations for children aged 12 months to 35 months preferably be given in the thigh muscle (or in the deltoid muscle of the arm if it's big enough), and to children aged 3 years and older in the deltoid muscle of the arm.
