By LAURAN NEERGAARD

WASHINGTON (AP) - Whooping cough, one of those ancient scourges that infant vaccination was meant to wipe out, is making a dangerous comeback: It turns out the vaccine that babies get starts wearing off by adolescence.

Funny, I've know that for a while now. It's nothing new to me. I wonder why it's new to everyone else? :

Four + years ago when my granddaughter was a newborn her pediatrician (since fired) was pushing the whooping cough vaccine because there was "an epidemic in Vermont." My daughter asked questions. The epidemic was 30 cases. The people with whooping cough were teenagers who had, of course, been vaccinated.

This is new? This is news?

I had it when I was a teenager. Did my doc diagnose me with it? Oh hell no. I was vaccinated, so how could I have had it!

This was in the mid 80's too!

I have heard they are comming out with a vaccine that is for 7+ year olds. I guess the current vaccines cannot be given above the age 7. This of course is 2nd hand info, I will see if I can find a link or something. But that would explain why they are suddenly making a big deal about it. Scare the public, introduce a new vax, collect all the money.

Yeah, our paper ran an AP article on this yesterday which stated that Glaxo asked for FDA approval for Boostrix, which would be a booster for teens, given at the time of the tetanus and diphtheria booster. Aventis Pasteur is going to try for approval for Adacel pertussis-tetanus-diphtheria booster for ages 11 to 64.

Isn't it an amazing coincidence that the headlines hit just as Glaxo asked for approval?
