This is an old article about the shingles vaccine. The only reason for my title is this sentence:

Quote:
Merck, which has been hurt by the withdrawal from the market of its pain drug Vioxx, is counting heavily on vaccines for growth in the next few years.
Hmmmm. So we're supposed to believe they make no money on vaccines, while blindly accepting the fact that they're "counting heavily on vaccines for growth"? Um, what kind of growth would that be? Are they trying to become the largest not-for-profit organization in the world? Is that it?

Clearly vaccines are a lot more profitable than some would like us to believe. (Not that many of us had doubts, but it's just a tiny bit of info useful for when people start the old "vaccines aren't even profitable" bs.) Companies don't count on marginally profitable products for growth.

People are astonished when I ask them, "What is 1 times 300 million? Now what is 6 times 300 million? Really? And you still believe it's not about the money, huh, honey?"

Merck has been on a roll over the last 12 months. All licensed and promptly recommended universally:

Gardasil (HPV)
Zostavax (shingles)
ProQuad (MMR +V)
Vaqta (lowered indication age to 12 months)
RotaTeq (rotavirus)
Varivax (2nd dose chicken pox)

CSL poised for big profit injection with flu vaccine
March 18, 2006

Quote:
If CSL captures 10 per cent of the US and European flu vaccine markets in 2010, it will involve around 30 million doses (it will have capacity for 40 million). If the price is $US10 ($13.60) a dose (lower than current prices), CSL would have additional revenue of $US300 million. Given the marginally costed basis of its production, the profit margin would be high, resulting in a substantial rise in CSL's 2010 profits.
Quote:
CSL has two other major profit boosters between now and 2010 * the human papillomavirus vaccine (HPV) and its traditional global plasma business.
Quote:
Analysts say that the HPV market will be between $US1.5 billion and $US4 billion.

So far Merck has won four Voixx cases and has lost three, with one wrapping up today or tomorrow. They aren't in the poor house over Voixx.

Or you can say that drug companies are not making money on vaccines, but are sure making money on all the new drugs they flood the market with to treat common illnesses that were probably caused by the vaccines...Hmmm, makes you wonder about all those allergy issues, hormonal issues, gut issues and other common health problems that these pharmaceutical companies are making big money on.

You could write it up in a short little story.
The magic fairies are so sweet that they are offering their magic tonic for FREE! There is no cost to you so why not get it. They don't make any profit so of course it is safe. It isn't like they are making money off of us.
Hey BTW, Can you beieve the price of my reflux meds went up again, and Jmmy's ritalin and inhaler are costing us a fortune and who could believe that dh would need heart meds at 40. Good thing these vaccines are cheap!
