It does NOT say that prevnar caused a 99% drop in ear infections. It says:

Paradiso agreed, adding that the current vaccine has caused a dramatic — 99 percent — reduction in infections in the serotypes that are covered by the vaccine.

Same problem as prevnar has always had- eliminates one kind of bug, and another fills in.

well I didn't read the link yet, but there was this post the other day and I could totally be misinterpreting it, but isn't the info in the below thread stating the complete opposite?

Yeah...the fine art of telling the truth and being totally deceptive at the same time.

Unfortunately, Prevnar seems to have increased the number of antibiotic-resistant ear infections at the same time.

Resistant bacteria linked to ear infections emerges, study finds
Child vaccine linked to antibiotic-resistant bug
New strain of strep emerges as major US infection

But, don't worry! They're already working on a 13-strain version of the pneumococcal vaccine.

Exactly, I read it that they were implying 99% drop in serotype causing the infections. Seems way out there though.

Eh, this type of bacterial vaccine seems to be VERY effective against the strains contained. Problem is that there is an endless supply of other buggers to fill in the void.
