My SIL's two month old is supposed to be at my in-laws for Christmas. He just got his two month vaxes which I assume included the rotavirus vax. I have a 5 week old and I'm worried about the vax shedding and making my baby (or any of us) sick.

Other than not participating in Christmas, is there anything I can do?

Hand washing is about it.

Do not change the vaccinated baby's diaper and make sure there is LOTS of handwashing!!!

Try to do your best to keep your babe's hands out of their mouth...what ever anyone else touches after a diaper change could be contaminated.

My dd is fully vaxed (except rotavirus), but my ped refuses to even carry the rotavirus vax because he believes it is too risky to give to children. I'm not sure how many peds feel the same way, but the baby may not have received it.

Maybe you can just casually ask during conversation which shots her baby got. Then you will know if you have to worry or not.

I'd just flat out ask her if he got the rotavirus vax and explain that it sheds. Hopefully she is nice and will be extra careful around you and your kids. Plus, if she did get the vax her ped may have not told her it sheds. But I would just ask her straight out if he got it so you know one way or the other. No sense worrying if there's no need at all.

Good suggestion, Cloak. Sometimes just being straightforward and asking can simplify things a lot.

I would ask straight out, too. If he didn't get it, then you can relax and if he DID get it, you can explain a bit about shedding and ask that everyone who would change a diaper be extra vigilant about handwashing!

There might be a sudden drop of interest in:
a)diaper changing for that babe
b)shaking hands with anyone who has changed the babe's diaper

A sort of reverse "herd immunity" effect

It hasn't been studied, but I think there's an ok chance that when a baby in a house gets that vax, the parents and siblings shed, too.
(rotavirus is one of those things you can get over and over again, and adults shed rotavirus very often.)

I asked the same thing recently. The baby I watch is getting his 2nd Rota shot (plus however many more recommeded ones there are these days) on Friday. He'll be home for a week after the shot, but it's still able to shed. I have to be honest, if we get it once, I won't watch him any more. But until that happens, I'm just going to try to wear gloves when changing him and then wash my hands REALLY well afterwards. Shedding shots suck.

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it. Rotavirus is everywhere, and most kids catch it before age 3, and many before age one.
The vaccine *is* attenuated, so if you catch the vax strain, it'll probably be milder than the wild version.
