What does it mean for individual child?
I understand what serotype replacement means for the population in general. However, for individual child, does it mean that the baby can still be affected by those strains that are covered by the vaccine AND those that are not?

Well, yeah...but it can be looked at in a 'the cup is half full' kind of way, as well.
For example, being colonized with pneumococcus has a protective effect against staph infections. So it's not like a non-Prevnar'ed kid has an overall increased risk of invasive bacterial disease.

Serotype replacement tends to affect the vaccinated....or at least affect them to a stronger degree. When a vax works against a specific type of bacteria, other (usually stronger) bacteria moves in "for the kill". So, they're seeing other bacteria cause THE SAME PROBLEMS, especially ear infections....does that make sense?

Here are some links on that:

Although nasopharyngeal carriage of pneumococci of serotypes included in the conjugate-vaccine was greatly reduced after pneumococcal vaccinations, immediate and complete replacement by non-vaccine pneumococcal serotypes took place

In the case of prevnar, they're also seeing an issue with staph.
