National Influenza Activity
BOSTON -- State health officials have confirmed the fourth flu-related death of a child this year in Massachusetts.

The Department of Public Health says a 12-year-old girl from Worcester County died Sunday from flu complications, two days after a 15-year-old boy died in Newton from flu-related pneumonia.

There names were not made public because of medical privacy laws.

A 14-year-old from Middlesex County and 6-year-old from Suffolk County died during the first two days of March. Officials say they suffered from a number of health problems that likely contributed to flu complications.

This year's pediatric deaths from influenza were the first in Massachusetts since 2006.

Dr. Alfred DeMaria, the agency's director of communicable disease control, says the worst of the flu season is over.
Why don't they report whether the children were vaxed or not??? Are they trying to hide the fact that maybe the children were vaxed and still got the flu?

Just as I thought, they finally ran a preview that said the most recent victim did get the flu vaccine. I never really understood the flu vaccine anyway. It is so sad that people are being misinformed, being told that the flu vaccine is protection from every bug out there. I've had people say "you should get the vaccine even if you never get the flu because it protects against all colds too". Who is giving this bogus info out?

If they don't give you much information I go by what is left unsaid. I am assuming those kids were vaccinated, they were on chemotherapy, were sick for a long time before flu season and this was the last straw.

JMO since they won't tell us otherwise.

Agreed. I've learned that if the kids are NOT vaccinated, they make a strong point to say, "The children that died from _________ complications were not vaccinated."

Otherwise, it seems like they just don't say anything at all.

*sigh*

I'm in Massachusetts.

Only one of the four children who died got the vaccine. The other 3 deaths were among unvaccinated children.

I'm in Mass too - and they said that 2 out of the 4 kids had no health problems at all. So sad.

I'd like to see where you read that? Could you post the newspaper article, hospital record, or whatever....

I see that the only girl who had no health problems and yet died from the flu is a child who had received the flu shot.

The other kids didn't get the flu shot but it said they had numerous health problems.

If a child is immune compromised the physician in charge will push the flu shot for all he's worth.

So what were their health problems? I am just thinking. Why weren't they vaccinated?

Could it be that they were vaccine damaged?

I doubt any more information will be released, as the families deserve their privacy.

This is so sad--how devastated the families must be.

The Newton boy, too, had no previous health problems/underlying conditions. That's how it's been reported here in Mass.--I think that the article here didn't mention him specifically since it was more mentioning that only one of the children had the flu shot.

The article did point out that the flu shot could not have protected against the strain that these children got. (Of course, they still say to go out and get vaccinated, but that's another story.)

They use any way they can to continue pimping their products -

First a subliminal message to reinforce the belief:
Quote:
BOSTON (WBZ) She is the only child among those who recently died who did get the flu shot this year.

A little bit of facts thrown in (always in the middle of the story) for some credibility:
Quote:
This year's vaccine did not protect against one of the most aggressive strains of the disease, which has contributed to the problem.

Next step is to set us up as future customers:
Quote:
Manufacturers are already revamping the flu vaccine for next winter.

At the end of course, the most important message:
Quote:
There have been nearly 11,000 confirmed cases of the flu here in Massachusetts so far this winter -- more than triple the number we had last year.
78

Every newspaper story I read about medicine is constructed in the same way. They follow the same outline.

One might also ask how they were treated, nutritionally and medically, for the flu, the pneumonia, and any other health conditions.
