My 32 Month old DD is entirely unvaxed thus far, and still breastfed. I was confident in my decision to leave her unvaxed, but during the past year she has developed virus-induced asthma, and has sometimes severe respiratory distress when she gets even the tiniest cold.

It occurred to me that maybe I needed to vaccinate her against Pertussis because she would potentially be in serious danger if she contracted it with her compromised airways.

So - is the Pertussis vaccine safer now? Do they use the whole-cell vaccine any more? Is she safer now that she is nearly 3?

This is an incredibly hard decision to make. She is at-home with me, but we are social and do spend time with lots of other Moms and Babes, and I am planning on joining the YMCA, where she will spend an hour at a time in their childcare.

Any thoughts appreciated,

Sarah

I wouldn't- personally.

First- pertussis is only available in combo. Not as a single vax.

Next- the efficacy of the vax is VERY low.

Also- the vax has a high reaction rate.

I agree 100%

My SIL is a teacher and she says that when there is pertussis outbreak, everyone gets sick (including vax'd kids)

I have 4 kids with asthma
I WILL NOT vaccinate them against pertussis
My oldest DD has the worst asthma and allergies by far she was partially immunized before I learned better
she had a major reaction to her 3rd immunization which had pertussis in it

but I do avoid swimming pools etc when I hear there is an outbreak. We also homeschool so it lessens exposure. Whooping Cough in this house would be INSANE!! But it is treatable homeopathically..

Mama to SDD (12), DD (8), DD (6), DD, (4), DS (3) and new little babe arriving Dec. We are in the process of building our cob home and homestead

Children who actually have had wc, have a much lower chance of ever getting asthma. I don't know how it affects kids who already have asthma, but in all truthfulness, I would not take a chance and inject them with the pertussis bacteria.

That injection is used to cause allergies in test animals.
