A couple of weeks ago, I was showing my ultrasound pics to a friend of mine and she pointed out that in the apparent-penis shot, if you cover up the protruding part, it definitely could look like a labia/clitoris. Since seeing it that way, I haven't been able to stop thinking about it - I even dreamt a few nights ago that the baby was born a girl!

So would you guys mind looking at this shot again and tell me what you think?

I looked at some ultrasound galleries to see what other boy images look like, and in most of the other ones, you can clearly see the scrotum, and the shape of the penis is a little different. But if this isn't a penis, what is it? Part of the umbilical cord?

I don't know what to think at this point!! :

not in your DDC, but on first glance you're right, that looks like girl parts to me, minus that protuding spot anyway. the three lines are there. not that i'm an expert on newborn penises, but it could be an umbilical cord. although then again everything does seem to be a little more in the front than between the legs, which would suggest boy. hmm, so basically i'm no help, but i think i'm going to go with boy because of the position of "protrusion" (i hate calling one of your baby's body parts a protrusion, haha). but not much longer until you find out for sure.

Not what my ds' penis looked like on the u/s... it was more of a longer, skinny shape. I'm not sure what it could be, perhaps a bunch or twist of cord... but I really don't know!

I don't know, but it looks like a penis to me. At my 16 week u/s, you could see 3 lines clearly for this baby, but there was also a penis. At both thee 20 week and 28 week u/s, there was no doubt he is all boy. I think 3 lines are stilll fairly common in boys.

I sometmes hang in the April DDC and I remember seeing your u/s shots and thinking that it looked more like girl parts than boy parts....... If you look at mine there are 2 disctinct "berries" in the front and a "twig" here

It could be an umbilical cord but If your baby is a boy, then he is blessed!!

I'm not in your DDC and I don't mean to cause doubt, but the penis just looks too big and round, you know?

Hmm yeah that doesn't look like a penis at all it's the size of my thumb and almost half the widht of the baby's leg it could still be a boy but i think that has to be cord. I would just get some pink just in case.

It looks like it to me and let me tell you I know a penis when I see one- lol just kidding! I see the round at the bottom as the um...scrotum and the button protruding from it as the penis itself, does that make sense? Think of a bozo sitting on a copy machine and you'll have the image I'm thinking of.

This conjurs up all kinds of interesting images in my head. :

This is our boy parts pic from our 18wk u/s. I have no idea what they are looking at but the u/s tech was convinced. If it weren't for a later u/s where I know I saw boy parts, you would have me doubting my little guy as well.

And for what it is worth... I think your pic looks lilke boy parts to me.

I think it looks like a penis to me. I read that the scrotum doesn't form or isn't on the outside or however it works until around 28 weeks or so maybe? Here is the picture we have: http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m...1125080917.jpg

I think it looks pretty similar. We have had a few u/s and have seen that it is a boy at each one. I'm sorry you feel so confused!

It definitley looks like a boy to me. It looks big and round because you aren't seeing the penis sticking out, you're seeing it from below, with the tip hanging down and slightly protruding.

it looks like a boy to me. like a pp said, the angle would be from baby sitting on a copy machine. LOL. itll be interesting to find out for sure though! my girls' ultrasound pic showed three lines that were much more distinct.

Yep, I'd say it's a boy. My guess is the testicles haven't dropped yet at this point, and remember, they are bi-sected, so when they're pulled up into the body, it can look like the "three lines" of the labia.

I'm thinking boy, too. The 3 lines don't seem to be pronounced enough for me to say girl, and it definitely looks like a penis. I'd pick out some girl names, just in case, though!

Looks all boy to me, I think the angle is what's confusing. All babies basically start with the same parts, which might explain why an early shot can be confusing to the untrained eye. I know at our first u/s I was like...those little dots tell you she's a girl? I dunno...Then a week later at the second u/s it was 10 times clearer (and she was 10 times more cooperative)

Thanks to everyone for your feedback! I see what you're saying about the image being a cross-sectional "slice" rather than just a snapshot of the outside of the baby...so that makes sense.

Even so, I can't say I'm 100% convinced anymore, so I guess we'll have to wait til April to be certain. (Although I must admit, if I could somehow manage to get another ultrasound, it would be awfully tempting!)

The later ultrasounds will not show the parts as well because the baby is too crowded, so don't waste your money. I think the "girl" parts are actually feet bones and that your baby has a big penis.

I think it looks a little big for a baby, but it does look like a penis...
Of course, they come in all different sizes, and remember that baby's genitals of both genders are often engorged from hormones.

You can see some bones as thin lines. If the heels are bent a certain way under the butt, or crossed under there, they might make lines.

Not in your DDC, but that looks NOTHING like my DD's u/s pic and she is all girl. My OB did joke with us about an angle where the umbilical cord looked like a penis, but it was literally as wide as her thigh and printed it out for DH to show his friends, but her girl parts had a very distinct 3 lines that I don't see in this shot.

The u/s tech or OB would know - I can't see them mixing up the umbilical cord with a penis!

I also wanted to add that when you are seeing it "in motion" it is probably clearer to the ultrasound tech. It can be difficult to pick one still picture that represents what they were able to see while they were moving the probe around. I know with our later ultrasound, they couldn't get a good enough pic of it to send home, but there was no doubt when I was looking at it on the screen that it was definitely a penis coming in and out of view.

Boy.

The part where there seem to be three lines is the scrotum- it's bulging out WAY too far to be a vulva.

I'll eat my shoe if that's a girl. I'll eat your shoe, too.
