I am just having an awful time getting any sleep. I can only sleep from like 10pm to 1am and then wake up to my heart racing about 130bpm. Then it takes several hours for my heart to calm down and for me to quit shaking and sweating which by that time everyone is awake. It also happens if I try to nap during the day- I can only sleep for about 15min and then it starts again and I feel like poo for the next few hours. So basically in the last 2 weeks I have gotten about 3 hours a sleep a night. I am so exhausted I just want to die. I had my thyroid levels checked on Mon. since I have hyperthyroidism- but apparently they are fine. So I don't know what is going on, but I feel like crap and can't quit crying because I am so frickin exhausted.
I am assuming it must just be the hormones- but is anyone else experiencing this?

Not that exactly. I wake up around 3 AM, sometimes a little later, then can't get back to sleep for an hour or so. And if it's a particularly weird, vivid dream that wakes me up, then sometimes I don't want to get back to sleep, you know, until my subconscious resets itself.

What are you doing in the evenings? Are you taking time to wind down before you go to bed?

Mine is the same as the last post, around 3 a.m. I'm not sure what's waking me up, I don't seem anxious or worried- usually. It takes awhile to get back to sleep, a couple of hours- that's when I start worrying and I have to keep redirecting my mind back to focusing on breathing.

That sounds a little concerning to me to have heart-rate up like that and be shaking and sweating. I would definitely talk to my midwife or doc about that.

I with you though on the feeling like crap, I'm so done feeling like crap!
Sleep doesn't seem to help at all, when I do get a nap I just feel the same.

I can relate a little. I suffer from racing heart and shortness of breath that has been attributed to anxiety. I am actually medicated (and have been cutting down on the medication in the last few weeks) for anxiety. But since I learned of this pregnancy, I have been experiencing more frequent racing heart episodes that last a few hours at a time. Mine are more during the day than at night; nonetheless, I am definitely having problems sleeping. I have been waking up between 3:#0 and 4, unable to go back to sleep. By 6 am, when I have to get out of bed and shower for work, I am already feeling achy and exhausted from lack of a good night's sleep. I feel for you!

lots of sleep difficulties: I cant sleep until 12:00 am or 1, then I wake up starving/nauseaous at 4:30 or 5:00 am, then cant sleep again till 8 or9 am . When i finally drag my arse our of bed around 10 or 11 ( I work form home so luckily can adjus tmy hours)I am logy, head shrouded in a fog of sleepyness, and comletely zonked.
I'm exhausted the rest of the time, until around 7 pm or so I miraculously become wide awake until midnight.
Heart racing definately experienced too: after lucid dreams mostly.

Not quite the same problems, but I just can't get comfortable. I'm trying everything, pillows all over the place, propping myself up, leaning against DH (he hates this). It's not that I'm not tired, I'm usually quite exhausted, but I just can't get comfortable. Also haven't been sleeping soundly through the night since I just can't get comfortable.

What I really want to do is roll over onto my right side, it's just so comfortable while pregnant...well at least for the 30 seconds or so until the I've-gotta-barf feeling kicks in :

Hopefully we'll all get a break for a few months before our babies get here, won't be doing much sleeping at all then

I'm getting the 3am wake-up call also. I usually try to get back to sleep for a hour, then realize I'm starving and head to the kitchen for some muesli. By that time, I've usually been awake for a hour and a half or so, and I finally fall back asleep. I'm glad I am in good company with the insomnia.

I'm having trouble sleeping at night as well and am also SO FREAKIN TIRED during the day that I am just miserable. I feel like I could nap at any given time during the day and I am really tired when I wake up in the morning, but am unable to go back to sleep. I've been trying to night-wean DS, so his bouts of hysteria in the middle of the night aren't helping, I turn into uber-bitch mom. My mind races at night and in the wee hours- as some of you mentioned from vivid dreams, and also just from daily worries and the "laundry-list".

I spend the entire day EXHAUSTED and then have trouble nodding off even when I crawl into bed after 12am. I don't find myself hitting "good sleep" until at least 5-6am...so I end up sleeping in really late.
My schedule is totally screwed up. I'm there with you!

To the OP...perhaps try some chamomile tea? or lemon balm? I think that if your heart is beating so fast, that there is something up. Both lemon balm and chamomile are safe during pregnancy and help to tuned you down a bit.

I have the 3-4 a.m. wake-up pee call, then can't go back to sleep for at least an hour. It's funny to me that this can start so early in pregnancy...I am just 6 weeks. It's just preparing us for new babies (however far in advance)! Shall we embrace it?

I also have trouble sleeping at night. Luckily my kids are old enough that I can nap during the day if I need to. Sometimes it is nausea that wakes me up and makes it impossible to get comfortable again.

come on 2nd trimesters!!

I am having trouble sleeping this time around. With my first, I was so exhausted all the time I slept 10 hours a night. THis time, I am tired but my mind races when I lay down to go to bed. it takes alot of effort to relax. Then I wake up frequently during the night. I have really vivid dreams that wake me up. In the morning I have to pee so bad I can't get back to sleep. Once I get up to go I can't get back to slep either.

OP, you might want to check out the heart palpitations thread on this DDC. do you think you might have mitral valve prolapse?

http://www.mitralvalveprolapse.com/symptoms.html

I know I have bouts of tachycardia (heart racing) and it is worse when lying down. Night time is worst.

Also, wanted to mention that homeopathics are safe for pregnancy and I take Hyland's Calms Forte when I have bad insomnia. It is a life saver for me.

XOXO
B

ETA: There is a lot of data to suggest that people with thyroid issues very often have mitral valve prolapse. I see it come up a lot when I google stuff about MVP. So maybe this is worth checking into??
