Anyone know what the midwife situation is in Brazil? I've heard from a few people that there are many midwives, but I've also been talking to a friend (native Brazilian) and she said midwifery is pretty much non existent, especially in the São Paulo area. Also, are the midwives only CNMs or are there midwives with similar credentials to a CPM? Thank you!

Hello!! How are you?

I live in São Paulo and yes, you have plenty of options for midwives here!

You can either choose a place for your baby to be delivered just by midwives (like in a bathtub, etc) or you can use their services in the maternity of your choice. Let me know what you need and I can help you find it!

Wow!! Thank you! That was so helpful:) I am not currently in São Paulo, but there is a likely chance we will be moving there soon and I wanted to get a feel for the birth atmosphere. Would it be okay for me to contact you if I have any more questions?

Yes! There are a bunch! Mostly nurse-midwives but also midwives who were not nurses before. There is a great birth center too attended only by midwives.

I'm on a fb group (its in portuguese though) of moms who are for natural birth throughout brazil. They seem to know midwives/OBs/doulas who do natural births pretty much anywhere in brazil. You probably don't want to just go into a hospital and ask for an OB, they will just schedule a c-section. The group is called "parto normal". Its small, but there is a growing movement towards natural birth in Brazil, as the current c-section rate in private hospitals is upwards of 80-90%.

There's a US-trained CPM in Brasilia, not sure about Sao Paulo.

Can you send me the link for that Facebook group? Please! smile.gif My sister in law married a Brazilian man and they just found out that they're expecting their first baby. It is discouraging because she knows no one there that hasn't had a c section. greensad.gif

I'm sending you a message. I would love to get in contact with her and see if I could help her out! The situation in Brazil varies greatly from state to state and city to city. But yeah, c-section rate is ridiculous.
