Anyone know what the midwife situation is in Brazil? I've heard from a few people that there are many midwives, but I've also been talking to a friend (native Brazilian) and she said midwifery is pretty much non existent, especially in the São Paulo area. Also, are the midwives only CNMs or are there midwives with similar credentials to a CPM? Thank you!
Hello!! How are you?
I live in São Paulo and yes, you have plenty of options for midwives here!
You can either choose a place for your baby to be delivered just by midwives (like in a bathtub, etc) or you can use their services in the maternity of your choice. Let me know what you need and I can help you find it!
Wow!! Thank you! That was so helpful:) I am not currently in São Paulo, but there is a likely chance we will be moving there soon and I wanted to get a feel for the birth atmosphere. Would it be okay for me to contact you if I have any more questions?
There's a US-trained CPM in Brasilia, not sure about Sao Paulo.
So I'm a Certified Professional Midwife here in the States, looking to possibly traveling to Brazil next May to deliver an American friend who is currently living near Cruzeiro do Sul - AC, Brazil.
She has a Brazilian doctor friend there who is telling her that home births in Brazil are illegal and that she will not be able to get a birth certificate filed if she births out of the hospital.
She said she hears of people doing home births there, but is not connected with the community and is currently living out in the Amazon and doesn't have good access to communication.
So I'm just asking here if anyone has information on what is correct or not about home birth in the Cruzeiro do Sul area in Brazil, and how we would file a birth certificate ?? Or who we can contact to get this information?
