Greetings from B.C.!
Just to introduce myself: I'm a 28-year-old SAHM/WAHM for my precocious 13 mo old dd, Avery. Though always slightly crunchy, organic eating type of gal, it wasn't until my difficulties with nursing that I discovered AP. My husband and I were already practicing it, but didn't know it had a name.
Four days after dd was born, she refused to latch. After a horrible labour, unexpected c-section, and early separation from the baby, breastfeeding went from bad to worse. Although I tried every breastfeeding trick and technique (nipple shells, nipple shields, finger feeding, supplemental nursing systems, every position, at every time of day, light room, dim room, co-bathing, baby wearing, lots of skin, no skin --- everything!) and worked with a LC for weeks on end, she continued to refuse the breast. It was an utter mystery to the LC, who said I was doing everything right. It was then that I started to pump, though I had no idea about the exausting, difficult road that lay before me. All that mattered to me is that she received mother's milk.
Thirteen months later, I am still pumping. She never nursed, but is a fat, healthy and happy bambina today thanks to mommy's milk. New problem? She refuses to be fed solids and self feeds only tiny amounts (and spits them out most of the time anyway). Avery is the definition of high-needs baby, but her infectious smile and funny sense of humour makes my heart explode with joy and happiness. Mothering is wonderful.
Nice to meet you all =)
