Hi,

I'm currently redecorating the breastfeeding board in Holland. I was looking for emoticons considering breastfeeding and I found this board. Looks great and I love the atmosphese here. I will be lurking around here for a little bit.

Can I use the emoticons for our site (a free site with help from volunteers and lactating profs from the cooperating breastfeeding organisations Holland, including LLL)?

Unfortunately the img tag is off... but this is the emoticon which I made... your are free to use it, although it may be too explicite for non-europeans. I think its cute since this smilie looks like my own little boy:

Thanks for listening!

Hi! I remember reading the links on your site when my baby was young. Thanks for maintaining it! I spent a few months in Amsterdam doing research in 1994 and have a warm place in my heart just thinking about that time, so finding a breastfeeding site with an .nl suffix made me happy.

Welcome! I love your breastfeeding smilie.

My husband is Dutch. I've been to Holland 3 times and I love it there. I was just emailing my husband about slate.com - they did a series of essays (diary entries, really) about life in Holland that I thought was right on. My husband agreed. It was really nicely written.

LOL, Yes she is my aunt. Yep, my mom and her entire family are dutch. They came over from Holland in the later 50s and opened a dutch bakery out here in California (some are still in Holland though!)

My oma and cousin are Leentje, and my other oma is Zoetje. I love your tje ending names!

I have read the whole week ust now... this is very funny!! And it is pretty right on too.. although his view is a little on the tourist-side. I mean, drugs and hookers is not something that is part of my life at all... although I live in Amsterdam too, on the Java-eiland you can see in his slide show. But yes, I have my boy, my buggy and all my groceries on 1 bike too!!!

So nice that you know our site? Does that mean you read/speak dutch? Very good for just a couple of months stay!

Nice that just the suffix makes you so happy... means something about being here!

Thank you, you can sure use it and distribute is, please do!

Conditions are: never remove my name from the comments or use it in any other way then to promote breastfeeding, and never use it if you are commercially involved in baby-products or violating the WHO-code considering breastfeeding (don't even try to 'promote' breastfeeding then!).

Enjoy the smilie, I would be proud if you'd use it. How can I get your site administration to take it on?

I can read Nederlandse-taal with a dictionary, not very well or fluently. When I was there I was able to understand sermons in synagogue (in part because there were Hebrew phrases interspersed) and television shows. I didn't get jokes though, I think when you are really fluent in a foreign language you start to get the jokes. I would try to speak to people in Dutch and they would accuse me of having a German accent. Not fair, we don't even have classes for reading Dutch here. Every Dutch person in Amsterdam could speak English, French, German and some absurdly difficult other foreign language that they were just picking up for a hobby!

My favorite memory was of taking a walk on a Saturday afternoon and passing a couple riding bikes with the children on the back, singing the 1970s song "Feelings" to each other!

Do you know this song, by Adrian Belew, Postcard from Holland?

Quote:
Postcard From Holland

In Holland there is a table
in front of me
with cafe' au lait
and some kind of cookie
outside the window
there's a wide and gentle canal
two swans swim in it,
in their mirror images
they must be in love.

The handsome Holland people
ride ecological bikes
or sometimes their dogs
might take them along for a hike,
I stood by the tall ships
and stepped in some old Dutch dog shit,
it began to rain
a strange enchanted mist
and I love the cookies here
I could live forever here
with you.

You are absolutely right, once you start to get the jokes, you are a pro at understanding a language. When you start to tell jokes spontaneously you speak a language fluently. I was in Maryland when I was 16, visiting a friend who had been living in Holland for a year, and back then I could tell jokes; I hope my english is still as good as it was. Funny detail: I get sore muscles in my cheeks from speaking english with an american accent... very funny! No problem with the british tongue though . Did you have a particular problem with dutch (pronounciation et cetera)?

Part of the problem for foreigners, especially the english speaking, is that every dutch person starts in english if they suspect you speak english... very hard to practice dutch in that way.
