Hello there, I'm a 48 year old, 4th time pregnant mom living in Texas. I found your site through a freebee Mothering magazine in the waiting room of my midwife's Birthing Center. This will be my first birth in the US - I am originally from Europe and had my other 3 children there (2 in the UK and the last one at home in the Netherlands) 17, 16 and 13 years ago. I've known my husband for 25 years and we've been married for nearly 19 years. I'm very interested to see how my pregnancy will go at my "advanced" age, I'm hoping for an uncomplicated vaginal delivery, waterbirth maybe?, at our local birthing center. If I can keep away from hospitals here I shall be very happy.

Any moms in their late 40's out there?

: yeah, too many posts. I realized after I wrote that it made sense in my own head thread, but to no one else! I introduced myself and said I was nearly forty and thinking about #3, wondering how many other mamas were continuing to have babies into their forties.

I've made it through to 23 weeks.

Despite the fact that when I called the nurse of my Ob/Gyn at 16 weeks to report that I was pregnant/beg for an appt. she told me I was more than 50% likely to miscarry, even when I reiterated that I thought I was already in the second trimester! That's why I'm going to a Birthing Center for my pregnancy care - with medical personnel like that nurse "on my side" who needs enemies?!

Thanks, we feel blessed. My paternal grandma had her last child (of 4) at 46 and my maternal great-grandmother had her last child (of 4) at 44 - so it may run in the family, and on both sides. I'm sure if we were to look further back we would all find that numerous ancesters had children well into their 40s.

Welcome! You give me hope.

I am 42 and hop to resume TTC after things settle down with my troubled teenaged son.

I know that my time is running out, if it has not already; the decision to take a break was not my own, but the stress appears to have temporarily suppressed ovulation.

It is so exciting to hear about your pleasant surprise and your preparations for the new little blessing. Please, please hop over to the TTC Over 40 thread so that we can spoil you a bit.

Welcome to the Wise Mothers Club! I had my first when I was 21, and my second 17 years later. At 43, I am a much cooler, calmer momma than most. I love having no sense of ever facing an empty nest and honestly think that nursing into my mid-40's should long postpone menopause. The worst thing was having every birth person say... Well, at your age... I actually told my midwife to put it in my chart not to remind me of my age, I had not forgotten. In my mommas group there are a few moms that are young enough to be my daughter and I love that. I would love to have one more but really, I should have started saving for retirement because it ain't going to happen now. Good luck and welcome.

Welcome to Mothering and congrats on your pregnancy! Very exciting...

I'm the opposite of you, in a way - I'm American, but live in the UK (Scotland). Dh is British, which is why we're over here. What brought you and your husband to America?

Nice to 'meet' you and very glad you found MDC!

Friend since August 2002 IIRC, I would love to come to the playgroup, maybe before the birth as I would love to find out more about cloth diapering. I have not been to church much in the past year as I found the ambiance somewhat toxic. I do miss it though - I went on "Gorilla Sunday" and would like to hear the new Revd's services. (Hope I haven't said too much!) One has to have some kind of antidote for living in such a place as our town... could we say Stepford?

Come and say hi to me when I'm next there - it's obvious who I am....

Thanks for sharing this - it makes me feel less like a freak of nature.

On Saturday for the first time I experienced what I knew was inevitable: I was buying maternity clothes and at the checkout desk the assistant, who was about my age, said, "Are these for your daughter?" "No," I said, stepping back to reveal an obviously pregnant tummy, "They're for me". The poor woman was so embarrassed, and so was I.

Thank you.

DH's work brought us over to TX, we came in 1998. Before that we relocated from the UK to Germany and the Netherlands. We are both Brits. I have had maternity care in all 4 countries now and there are many cultural differences (although my experiences are very individual and cannot possibly be representative of a whole country!). Depending on where you're from in the States you must have found it hard/very hard to adjust to Scotland. Good luck!
